“The Lord does not hold back any portion of his love for you.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – August 13, 2026
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; Your cup runs over. Psalm 23:5, OSB
I was recently meditating upon Psalm 23 and decided to read it in a variety of translations. One of the ones I was reading is based on the Septuagint, which is the ancient Greek translation of the Old Testament. Interestingly, I noticed a single word that was different than any other version of this psalm I had ever seen: “your.” This one word unlocked a beautiful truth in this verse for me that I’d love to share with you today.
In verse 5, I have always heard it concluded with some version of “my cup runs over.” The focus and emphasis here is on my fulfillment and my satisfaction. If I put myself in the first person here and join my heart to this Psalm, I am overcome and overwhelmed by the goodness and the love of God as it fills my cup to overflowing. Yes and amen! This is a beautiful truth that has healed and sustained and formed followers of the Lord in every generation. Yet as I read in the Septuagint, I was taken aback by the way it persistently points every one of these actions back to God! “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; Your cup runs over.”
Your cup runs over.
What a profound shift of perspective when we go from “my cup” to “your cup.” My cup focuses on only half of the story- the joy and gift of receiving the love of God. Yet your cup reminds us afresh of the very nature of God and why our cup runs over in the first place. We love, as Scripture reminds us elsewhere, because he first loved us (1 John 4:19). He pours out his cup of mercy, love, and grace in abundance! The Lord does not hold back any portion of his love for you. He fills his cup and allows it to overflow, reaching us in our deepest and greatest place of need.
The Lord has given us every good thing, and he is not stingy in his gift-giving! No, remember today: his cup runs over.
Prayer
Father, thank you that you love us with an unending and super-abundant love, and it is from your first action of loving us that we can then know your love and share it with others, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Application
Prayerfully meditate today upon Psalm 23, asking the Lord to open your heart to the great truth that his cup runs over with love for you.
