Abundance

Written by Tripp Prince

“Scarcity has no place in the family of God.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – November 5, 2026

And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work… You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God. 2 Corinthians 9:8, 11, NIV

Culturally, we hear a great deal about abundance. Whenever I turn on the news, especially during campaign seasons, I hear politicians promising that their policies and platforms will lead to great abundance. And, of course, the converse is also true. If you vote for their opponent, they say, things will only get worse! Your bills will go up, and everything will cost more. But no matter what promises they make, their message is aimed at you!

By default, when left to ourselves, we focus on our own material abundance, security, and provision. The promises of politicians are so enticing to our ears because they speak to some of our deepest longings: “Vote for me, and you will have all that you need.”

In the kingdom of God, this promise has already been extended and met, for in Christ we have all that we need. Yet as Paul reminds us in 2 Corinthians, abundance is not for our comfort, but is meant to be given away. We have all that we need, so that we “will abound in every good work.” Paul adds that we are “enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion.”

A life focused on personal abundance is too small a vision. The kingdom of God is never lacking in resources, but by design the Lord invites his people to be the means by which his abundance is known and shared.

Don’t be an abundance hoarder. This is true of our money, but it extends into every area of our lives! If you have an abundance of wisdom, you’re meant to share it with those who need guidance. If you have an abundance of love, share it to strengthen and build up others. If you have an abundance of knowledge, teach others so they can, in turn, become teachers themselves. And where you lack, trust that, just as you give from your abundance, others will see you and meet your need from their overflowing cup.

Scarcity has no place in the family of God. Give thanks today for his abundant provision, and seek to live a generous life that overflows with thanksgiving to God for all things.

Prayer

Father, help us to see the abundance of your provision, and to remember that you invite us to be your hands and feet of generosity, so that through us others may come to know your great love for them, we pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.
