“A rushed and halfhearted faith will never enter the deep waters of abiding communion.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – November 7, 2026
“Let these words sink down into your ears, for the Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men.” But they did not understand this saying, and it was hidden from them so that they did not perceive it; and they were afraid to ask Him about this saying. Luke 9:44-45, NKJV
I find myself in an incredibly busy season of life. Between work, church, and family commitments, something is always tugging at my attention and needing my response. As such, I realize I’m often in a conversation yet only partially there, with my mind in a dozen places other than the one right in front of me. So, more than I care to admit, I’ll have to say something like, “I’m sorry, can you say that again?”
One reason we need to strive to be fully present to the people and places in front of us is that many things can only be understood when we fully give ourselves to them.
You can run errands, check email, or work around the house and get by with only a percentage of your attention on the task at hand. Yet you’ll never truly know your spouse or hear the longings and fears of your children unless you give them everything you have to give. And most importantly, you and I will never understand the words of Christ unless we open ourselves fully, without reservation or distraction, to what he has to say.
In Luke 9, our Lord has heavy and hard words to share with his disciples, telling them that he will be betrayed and given over to death. Of course, for good reason, we focus most often on the content of this message, yet notice the opening words of verse 44: “Let these words sink down into your ears.” In essence, our Lord is saying, “I have something to share with you that can only be understood if you are fully attentive to what I’m saying and you take the time to hold it close to your heart until you begin to understand.”
A rushed and halfhearted faith will never enter the deep waters of abiding communion.
If our attention and devotion to Christ are simply ticking off a box on an endless list of commitments, we shouldn’t be surprised if we struggle to sense his presence or intimacy with him. His words “sink in” to our hearts only when we cherish them and make them our singular focus and highest aim. Let his words sink in today, because they are the words our souls are most desperate to hear.
Prayer
Father, teach us to abide in you and to be fully open and attentive to your words, giving you all that we have, just as you gave everything for us in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.
Application
Where are you most rushed and inattentive in your life with God? How can you slow down and be fully present to him in this season, so that you can hear what he has to say to you?
