“Humility is the only currency that costs us our pride and enriches us beyond measure.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – April 22, 2026
Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. Philippians 2:6-7
There is only one proper response to the cross of Jesus Christ: falling to our knees. Not because someone told us to, not out of religious habit or Sunday duty. But because when we truly grasp what happened there, when we stand long enough at Calvary to feel its weight, our souls submit. The Son of God, through whom all things were made, hung on a tree. The Author of life submitted to death. The Creator of every human hand allowed those hands to drive nails through His own. And He did it willingly, lovingly, intentionally, for us. All we can say is, “I need You.”
It doesn’t matter how accomplished you are, how theologically learned, or how many years you’ve been walking with God. Every person who genuinely encounters the crucified Savior reaches the same point of complete dependence. The ground at the foot of the cross is the most level ground on earth. No one stands there; everyone kneels. And here is the staggering truth that should stop us cold: the King we kneel before is Himself the humble King. He did not demand our worship from a throne of comfortable distance. He descended, took on flesh, vulnerability, and limitation. He came to a table with broken, ordinary people and broke bread with them. He washed their feet, touched lepers, and wept at gravesides. The most powerful being in the universe made Himself nothing, and in doing so, showed us what true greatness looks like.
We come again and again to this humble King because we never stop needing what only He can provide. Grace upon grace. The table He sets is not a single meal but an ongoing feast. A reminder of how He brings life from death, transformation from failure, hope from the ashes of our worst choices. Every time we return to communion, prayer, or the foot of the cross, we are reminded that the price has been paid in full. Forever and ever, amen.
What does a humble heart bring to the humble King? Not impressive religious credentials, not a polished performance, and not a record of achievements meant to make us feel worthy of the audience. A humble heart offers praise upon praise. The only currency that costs us our pride and enriches us beyond measure. It brings honest need, openly expressed, and a spirit finally quiet enough to receive what grace has always been offering.
Be exalted. Be glorified. We lift You high, not because You need our praise to validate Your worth, but because we need to give it to remember ours. We are the beloved of the humble King. We kneel not in defeat but in wonder. From a humbled heart. To the humble King. Come again. Kneel again. Receive again. The table is set. Grace is waiting. Humble love longs for you.
“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45).
Prayer
Humble King, I come again to the cross with nothing impressive to offer, only my need and my praise. Exalt Yourself in my life today in proportion to my willingness to kneel. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Application
Begin each morning this week on your knees — literally — spending five minutes in silent gratitude before the humble King before the day’s demands pull you upright and forward. Let your body lead your heart into humility.
