Already Clean

Written by Boyd Bailey

You are already cleansed by obeying Christ’s words.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – June 5, 2026

Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. John 15:3, ESV

I just realized in my listening prayer exercise this morning that by receiving and obeying God’s Word and His commands, I am already cleansed, or, as Jesus illustrated, “I’m pruned” by His words. To prune is, of course, to cut back unfruitful branches to make room for the fruitful ones. Beautifully and methodically, the pruning shears of the Holy Spirit remove small twigs or suckers before they grow dominant and destructive, sucking the life out of my soul, along with the more obvious dead branches that are distracting and take up space. Pride, fear, lust, greed, and unbelief are among my sins in need of Christ’s cleansing words. Pruning is tough love. There is a quiet revolution in the Word of God. Not, be clean after sufficient effort. Not, might be clean if you perform well enough. Already clean, declared so by the word of Jesus himself, applied to the heart of every person who has received and obeyed what He has spoken.

Jesus used the image of pruning to describe how this cleansing works in a living, growing soul. The gardener does not wait for a branch to die completely before cutting it back. He moves through the vine with practiced, loving attention, removing small twigs before they become dominant and trimming what is unfruitful before it consumes the energy meant for what is fruitful. The pruning shears of the Spirit work the same way. He does not wait for pride to become destructive before He addresses it. He moves early, precisely, and with the vine’s long-term health always in view. This is what the Word of God does in a life genuinely open to it. Scripture is not merely information to be absorbed intellectually. Hebrews 4:12 describes it as living and active, sharper than any double-edged sword, penetrating to the division of soul and spirit, discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. When you read Scripture with an open and surrendered heart, you submit yourself to the pruning process. The Word identifies what needs to go: the pride that has been quietly growing, the fear that has been subtly shaping decisions, the unbelief dressed up as realism. The Spirit applies the cut with loving precision.

Pruning is tough love. It does not feel gentle in the moment. It feels like a loss, the removal of something that was part of you, however unproductive it may have been. But the gardener’s goal is never loss. It is always greater fruitfulness. John 15:2 says, “Every branch that bears fruit, he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.” The pruning is not punishment. It is an investment in your future fruitfulness. Begin each morning with a brief, honest prayer of availability, “Lord, your Word is welcome here. Show me what needs to go.” Then read slowly, not for volume but for depth. One paragraph. One verse. Enough to let the Spirit speak specifically rather than generally. When conviction comes during your reading, do not hurry past it. Sit with it. That discomfort is the pruning shears doing their work. Name what is being identified: pride, fear, greed, unbelief. Surrender it specifically rather than generally. Keep a simple journal of what the Spirit is pruning in this season. Naming it makes it concrete. Returning to it holds you accountable. And over time, you will see the pattern of what the Lord is methodically removing to make room for what he intends to grow. You are already cleansed by obeying Christ’s words.

“How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word” (Psalm 119:9).

Prayer

Lord, your Word is welcome in every part of my life. Prune what is unfruitful, remove what is destructive, and make room for the fruit you have always intended. I trust the gardener’s hands. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Application

Each morning this week, read one passage of Scripture slowly and ask the Holy Spirit to identify one specific thing that needs pruning. Name it, surrender it, and trust the gardener (God).
