The Weight of Carrying Too Much

Written by Pat Elsberry

True strength is found in knowing when to lay it down, and trusting God enough to pick it up.’

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – September 13, 2026

My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26

There comes a point in every weary heart where the weight becomes too much to carry.

At first, we don’t notice it. We pick things up slowly—responsibilities, expectations, grief, the needs of others. We tell ourselves we can handle it. We’ve always been the strong one. The one others lean on. The one who keeps going, even when it hurts.

But over time, the weight begins to press in. What once felt manageable now feels overwhelming. And quietly, without even realizing it, we begin to carry things God never asked us to hold.

Jesus speaks directly into this place of exhaustion: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).

Notice He doesn’t say, “Come to Me once you’ve figured it out.”

He doesn’t say, “Come to Me when you’ve finally laid it all down on your own.”

He simply says, come.

We often believe that laying things down means letting others down. But God never intended for us to carry the full weight of life on our own shoulders. Some burdens are meant to be released, not managed.

I know what it feels like to keep carrying things simply because you don’t know how to put the weight down. There have been times when God has had to remind me that I was never meant to carry it all by myself.

Even the strongest hearts need rest.

Even the most faithful need to be held.

When we continue to carry too much, we don’t just become physically tired; we grow spiritually weary. Our peace fades. Our joy feels distant. And our connection with God can feel strained under the pressure of trying to do it all.

But there is freedom in surrender.

You don’t have to prove your strength by how much you can carry. True strength is found in knowing when to lay it down, and trusting God enough to pick it up.

“Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken” (Psalm 55:22).

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank you for reminding us that we were never meant to carry every burden on our own. Help us recognize what we need to place in your hands and give us the faith to release it. Teach us to trust you with the things we cannot control and to rest in your strength instead of relying only on our own. May we always remember that you are near, you are faithful, and we are held securely in your care.

Application

Take inventory of what you’re carrying right now. What feels heavy? What feels like too much? Write it down if you need to. Then, one by one, bring each burden before the Lord in prayer. Ask Him to show you what is yours to carry, and what is His. Practice releasing those things daily, reminding yourself that you were never meant to carry them alone.
