Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – September 11, 2026
You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Matthew 24:6
The city of Rome, more than a thousand years old, was sacked by outside forces in AD 410. Augustine of Hippo, writing after that shock, spent The City of God reminding the church that the earthly city can be shaken while the city of God stands. Wars come and go; empires rise and fall. Our citizenship is in a country the sword cannot reach.
Jesus is doing something remarkable in His teaching. Just days before His violent death, He is pastoring people He will not be with when the wars come. He is speaking to Christians in AD 70, AD 410, AD 1453, AD 1914, AD 1939, AD 2026, and in every year that experiences war. He is saying, in effect: when the reports come, and they will, remember Me. Do not let your heart be shaken. The end is not what the headlines make it look like. I am eternal hope. This trust has kept Jesus’ followers steady in every century since. He will keep you steady this week.
Our Lord and Savior said wars will happen. Because of man’s pride and his need for power and control, there will be war. Power in the hands of unprincipled or evil leaders is deadly. You fight the war on earth with strategy, vigor, and commitment. You fight the spiritual battles with faith, God’s Word, salvation, prayer, truth, and the gospel of peace. We can trust God because we know that He ultimately defeats the enemies of sin, Satan, death, and hell!
John Piper, the longtime faithful pastor of our day, reminds us to model the peace of God during times of war. Christ still reigns. The nations are a drop in the bucket to Him. The Christian’s calling in wartime is not to add to the panic but to pray, serve, refuse to hate, and trust the Judge of the earth to do right. Peace is the fruit of trust.
When you read the latest headlines about wars and rumors of wars, you are called to receive difficult news without being inwardly shaken. As long as human hearts are broken, human wars will follow. Jesus’ diagnosis runs deeper than any headline: the wars we read about are the outward projections of the war inside every unredeemed heart. Fear God, not man’s wars.
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).
Prayer
Heavenly Father, when wars rage and rumors rise, quiet my alarm. You are the LORD who breaks the bow. Anchor my heart in Christ, who has overcome the world. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Application
Today, pray specifically for one nation at war and one leader in power. Fast from doom-scrolling news. Overcome evil with one good act: a call, a gift, a peacemaking word.
