Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – August 1, 2026
I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world. John 16:33, NLT
Peace is not the absence of conflict but the presence of Christ.
It is easy to forget this simple yet profound truth. We live in trying times. To borrow a phrase from the gospels, we are surrounded by “wars and rumors of wars” (Matthew 24:6). A few minutes of scrolling on your phone is all it takes to feed the anxiety that lives just beneath the surface. Though you may wake up in peace, within minutes your heart is flooded with concerns: When will this war end? Am I safe? Will I ever be able to catch up financially? Do I have what I need to provide for my children? On and on the questions could go.
And to be clear, it isn’t that these concerns are unimportant or invalid. The conflicts in our world and in our hearts are constant companions, day in and day out. The secret to a life of peace, then, isn’t simply to try and remove every source of tension or unrest in our lives and world. No, it is to instead learn to welcome Christ into every troubled place so that our fears and worries may be transformed by the gift of his abiding presence.
As our Lord reminds us in John 16, we will have many trials and sorrows. This is a given and a part of the human experience, so do not be surprised or dismayed when you face adversity in your life! Instead, hold these words close and let them be your daily companion: “Take heart, because I have overcome the world.” There is only one source of true peace, and it is found in the presence of Jesus Christ, the one who has conquered death and dwells with us even as we journey through life’s most difficult moments. Do not fear, for Christ is with us, and in him is perfect peace.
Prayer
Father, comfort us today with the gift of your presence and peace, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Application
In whatever way your peace is threatened today, consider how you can abide in Christ afresh as he leads you through the valleys of life and into places of peace.
