Keep Doing What You’re Doing

Written by Tripp Prince

Turn a spark of inspiration into the normative path of your life from which you do not deviate.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – September 20, 2025

And I will keep on doing what I am doing in order to cut the ground from under those who want an opportunity to be considered equal with us in the things they boast about. 2 Corinthians 11:12, NIV

“Variety is the spice of life.” I remember my mother saying this phrase in our home as a child more times than I can count. And when it comes to TV shows or dinner choices, I’m in full agreement! Yet on the other hand, there’s something profoundly good and true about consistency and continuity, doing today what you did yesterday, and by God’s grace, continuing to do tomorrow.

The people I respect the most are those who, in their lives, have embodied what Eugene Peterson called “a long obedience in the same direction.” It’s relatively easy to start on a path toward health or wholeness, deciding to stop a bad habit in order to exercise more or eat healthier. It is infinitely harder to continue on that path for weeks and months without wavering or losing heart. In a similar way, we may decide to take on habits of spiritual health, such as daily Bible reading or a regular habit of prayer, but the ultimate goal is for that initial spark of inspiration to become the normative path of our lives from which we do not deviate.

St. Paul was radical in his love and service to the Church at Corinth. As a result of the generosity of other Christians, he was able to care for them without expecting anything in return, allowing his message to be heard clearly without any potential for mixed motivation. Yet for him this wasn’t for show or a one-off display of piety. No, his life was one of service, and at every turn he had resolved to “keep on doing what he was doing” so that the life of Christ could be fully birthed in them.

What is the good thing you are doing in your life that you must continue doing?

Perhaps it is your love for an ailing parent. It may be your steadfast love for a wayward child. You might have to endure a difficult season at work as an example of faithfulness in the face of great adversity. Whatever it may be, remember afresh today that the Lord is with us in our struggles, giving us the strength we need for this present moment, and for the days that lie ahead. Stay the course and keep doing the good work that you’re doing.

Prayer

Father, help us finish well and remain obedient to the end, walking in the way of your kingdom today, tomorrow, and every day that is yet to come, through Christ at work in us we pray. Amen.
