“The most meaningful pursuits in life cannot be mastered overnight.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – January 29, 2026
And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. Acts 2:42, ESV
I’ve often heard that learning a new language later in life is a great challenge that yields countless benefits, forcing you to stretch your mind and push it to its limits. As such, a few friends and I have started taking weekly Greek lessons online, and it has proven to be both a challenge and a joy. That said, the deeper we go in our study, the more demanding it seems to become! I am realizing that if I want to continue to learn, it is going to require daily attentiveness and study. If I show up for my weekly lesson having spent the week ignoring the language and my assigned homework, it is a waste of time for both my tutor and me.
The most meaningful pursuits in life cannot be mastered overnight. This includes language study, marriage, parenting, a career, and yes, our lives of faith. Acts 2 tells the dramatic story of 3,000 people converting to Christ in a single day, responding in faith to Peter’s bold invitation: “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself” (Acts 2:38-39). These are inspirational words that move the heart and invite a response! And true as this may be, our life with Christ is not built on a single moment of conversion but upon the daily choice to surrender our wills to his and invite his Spirit to lead us in the paths of righteousness.
As such, Acts 2 moves from the evangelistic moment into the evangelistic lifestyle. The gospel is meant to turn your world upside down, reshuffling the deck and reordering every previously held allegiance and commitment. And so these passionate converts now commit themselves to the long road of discipleship, devoting themselves “to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.” Our first encounter with Christ changes everything, but we learn to live as his children through the abiding life of daily communion. Spend time in his presence and with his people so that this becomes a way of life and the lens through which you see yourself and the world around you.
Prayer
Father, we long to live in abiding communion with you, walking with you as you lead us in the way of peace, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Application
How can you more deeply “devote yourself” to the way of Jesus in this season, not in single, one-off actions, but through sustained habits of prayer, devotion, and community?
