“There is a thin space of divine presence embedded in ordinary human encounters.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – May 29, 2026
I tell you the truth, anyone who welcomes my messenger is welcoming me, and anyone who welcomes me is welcoming the Father who sent me. John 13:20
I was enjoying coffee with a friend one lazy afternoon recently, as we celebrated the Lord’s faithfulness in his life. Maybe you have experienced how the Holy Spirit works in these special times with special people. As he told his story, my life situation intersected with and resonated with what he was saying. Yes, I still tried to be present, truly listen, and join in my brother’s joy, but the Spirit simultaneously ministered to my heart with love, comfort, and clarity. A matter I had been praying about was being answered by a messenger of God right in front of me.
Jesus made this principle explicit in John 13:20. The one who welcomes his messenger welcomes him, and the one who welcomes him welcomes the Father. There is a thin space of divine presence embedded in ordinary human encounters, a revealing space most of us miss because we are not paying attention. We sit across the table from a friend, hear their story, and forget that the God of the universe may have orchestrated that specific conversation for our specific need at this specific moment. The messenger does not always know they are a messenger. That is part of what makes this so beautiful. A friend sharing his testimony of God’s faithfulness has no idea that every word lands like a letter written directly to your situation. He is simply being honest about his own journey. But the Holy Spirit is also at work in the listener, bringing comfort, clarity, and confirmation to a matter that has been carried in prayer for weeks.
This is why presence matters so much. In any conversation, the temptation is to be physically present while mentally elsewhere, formulating a response, rehearsing one’s own story, and waiting for a turn to speak. But the person who is truly present, who leans in, listens carefully, and honors the story being shared is positioned to receive what the Holy Spirit is carrying in that moment. Welcoming the messenger is an act of worship. It says to the Lord, I believe you speak through people. I believe this conversation is not accidental. I am paying attention. That posture of receptivity is itself a form of faith, a declaration that God is actively present in the ordinary rhythms of relationship and community.
The principle works in both directions. Every time you share honestly about what God has done in your life, you become a potential messenger for someone else. Your testimony, however unremarkable it may seem to you, may be the precise word another person has been waiting for the Spirit to deliver. You are not just telling your story. You may be carrying someone else’s answer. Stay alert to heaven’s messengers. They come in ordinary clothes, in casual settings, in unhurried conversations. They often don’t announce themselves. But if you are paying attention, truly present, genuinely listening, and expecting the Lord to speak, you will recognize them.
Prayer
Lord, open my ears to hear you in the voices of the people you place in my path. Make me fully present in every conversation and help me never miss a messenger you have sent. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Application
This week enter every significant conversation with a simple prayer beforehand — Lord, speak to me through this person and speak through me to them. Then listen more than you talk and pay attention to what stirs in your heart.
