Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – September 8, 2026
A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies. Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value. She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks. She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night. Proverbs 31:10-11, 17-18
I used to suppose this passage about the lamp burning through the night was a sanction for underprioritizing sleep (an application some of us will grab at and others of us shrink from). Although sleep deprivation is unavoidable for most mothers in the early months, I no longer think this passage is about housewives working late hours to get more done. In fact, Scripture is clear that rest and sleep are good gifts from our Father (Psalm 127:2). But the picture that the proverb does paint of an industrious wife and mother is a far cry from the stereotype of the woman watching daytime television or scrolling social media posts ad nauseam. Most of us will swing towards one of these extremes – either working ourselves to the bone to keep house and home up to standards, or letting it all go in the name of self-care. Yet what we need is a middle way in which to serve and manage our homes and families in a manner that is God-honoring and life-giving. So how can we wives and mothers find the wise pathway in the middle of these two ditches? Proverbs 31 has some hints for us.
The Proverbs 31 woman has a noble and trustworthy character. Before we can do what is right for our families, we need an honest check-in with the state of our hearts. Am I seeking with my whole heart that which is noble and worthy of God’s praise? Can my husband trust me explicitly, or do I speak slanderously behind his back, try to one-up him, or make my own plans without consulting his feelings? Do I seek peace within my home, or to be right? Do I resent my children for keeping me from other opportunities of self-expression, or do I choose gratitude to God for entrusting me with the task of discipling them? Once we have been honest before the Lord about areas in our hearts that need change, only then can we start to see the outward working of a heart set on the right course.
The picture of a ship set on its course with the wind in its sails is precisely the right one for a wife and mother about God’s business. We must wake up each day (hopefully after a good night’s sleep!) with conviction and purpose that we are fighters for our families against a world and a prince of this world that would see it torn apart. That does not mean we need to be fearful, for it is a glorious fight when we know that God is on our side and wants to build his Kingdom right in the midst of our very own homes. But to fight the good fight, we must add to our purpose stamina. I love the Rosie the Riveter sort of imagery of the Proverbs 31 woman with strong arms, working vigorously as with vengeance. And what makes her so strong? It’s love. Love in action. No matter what we feel we are getting or are not getting in return, we must commit to love our husbands and children with the tenderness, compassion, and faithfulness with which Christ consistently loves us. So let the love of Christ fill your sails again today, and keep those love lamps burning!
Prayer
Lord, I want to serve your Kingdom by serving my family valiantly. Give me the purposefulness and the stamina to love faithfully in all seasons. May your love be the oil that keeps my lamp burning. Amen.
Application
Spend time with the Lord examining any pitfalls or attitudes of the heart you may have fallen into that are keeping you from loving your family diligently. The aim is not guilt, but honesty that can lead to repentance and change.
