Are You Content?

Written by Tripp Prince

Discontentment places a burden upon your shoulders that you were never made to carry.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – March 19, 2026

But I have calmed and quieted myself, I am like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child I am content. Psalm 131:2, NIV

Years ago, I saw a commercial on TV that made me laugh, and for some reason has stuck with me to this day. A delivery truck arrived at a man’s front door, dropping off a brand new “3K TV.” The box was shiny and new, plastered with marketing material from top to bottom. Yet as the driver handed the box to the man, a truck drove down the street and caught his eye. With the 3K box in hand, he looks longingly at the passing truck that, on its side, was advertising an “all-new 4K model.” Moments before, he had everything he’d wanted, yet before the 3K TV was even in his home, the seed of discontentment was already sown.

Of all the virtues, I wonder if contentment is the most elusive in our day and age?

In an effort to keep a hand in our pocketbooks, corporations are constantly reminding us that last year’s model simply isn’t good enough. In fact, don’t you deserve to have the latest and greatest? Similarly, so-called “influencers” take to social media and flood our phones, setting themselves up as a standard of beauty, style, influence, power, and knowledge to which we must aspire. Even if what you have is good, don’t you want to be great?

Discontentment places a burden upon your shoulders that you were never made to carry. You were made to be like the infant, weaned and at perfect peace as you are held in your mother’s arms. Is there a more perfect picture of contentment and peace? When a child is held in the loving arms of a parent, every care and concern fades away. There is no pressure to perform, no expectation to meet, no deadline to hit. You are simply the recipient of pure, unmerited love. You are beloved by your mother and father, and that is the source of your contentment.

Do not underestimate the significance of our Lord Jesus teaching us to relate to God as our Father. This is not a “title” but is an invitation into relational intimacy. God our Father longs to know us as his beloved children, and it is when we are received into his loving arms that we discover the freedom of living a contented life.

Prayer

Father, teach us to rest in your loving arms today, like a child held in its parent’s arms, we pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Application

Rest in the love of God today, asking him to replace any discontentment with the truth that you are beloved by him.
