Wisdom in Community

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – August 9, 2025

Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith. Hebrews 13:7, ESV

The passionate pursuit of Wisdom should be the primary aim of every Christian life. And since Wisdom is a person, not a collection of ideas or concepts about what is good and true, this means a daily attentiveness to Jesus Christ and an unwavering commitment to grow, by grace, evermore into his likeness. The extent to which we have become wise men and women can be measured by the level of conformity to the way of Christ in each of our lives.

However, as we must always remember, the way of Christ is always found in our embrace of the collective wisdom of his people through the ages. You and I are not the first people to call Christ our Lord! And thanks be to God, the struggles and trials we face have been faced in similar ways by countless men and women who have gone before us. Each of them in their own day learned what it means to follow Jesus and walk in the way of Wisdom, and in so doing left for us a treasure chest of guidance and insight on how we can faithfully navigate the storms of our present day.

Wisdom is best discerned in community. Though Christ certainly meets us in personal and intimate ways, we should be wary of our own isolated discernment. If we get off the path, especially without realizing we’ve done so, it is essential that there are others who journey alongside us and gently lead us back where we need to go. The Lord isn’t asking you to be a solo warrior, a hero who makes a name for himself. Learn from the collective wisdom of the family of God, and you will certainly be wiser as a result!

Prayer

Father, thank you for the gift of your people throughout the ages, and here with us in this present moment. May we learn from them and together as your family discern what it means to walk in the way of Wisdom, we pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Application

Are there any areas of your life that have become overly isolated that would benefit from the collective wisdom of the family of God?
