“To live a life of integrity is to live outwardly what we say we believe.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – February 3, 2026
Vindicate me, O Lord, for I have walked in my integrity, and I have trusted in the Lord without wavering. Psalm 26:1
I often explain to my four-year-old son that an apology to his sister is only as good as the action that accompanies it. But of course, as is so often the case when disciplining a child, I get a niggling feeling that I too can be guilty of professing one thing with my lips while living out a very different heart-posture. I am quick to say that I trust the Lord with every area of my life, but if you came to my home and watched me in real time, would my attitude and activity reflect that trust? Or would you see the exasperation, impatience and waspishness that come from a doomed effort to run my home and life on my own merits and skills? I fear it would often be the latter.
It has been said that virtue in your head is not virtue at all. Virtue is only virtue as it’s lived out. King David knew this all too well. He wrote beautiful songs extoling God’s faithfulness, but his praise was so much more than lip service. When put to the test in the trenches, he lived out his trust in his God, waiting on God’s timing to fulfill his promises and refraining from taking matters into his own hands. His was a life of integrity – the aligning of belief with actions. He could call on the Lord to vindicate him because he had actively staked his hope on the steadfastness of God’s faithfulness.
How I long to live a life of that integrity. Every day throws up opportunities to grow in that direction! When temptation comes to grumble, control, or worry, I can stop and choose to act out what I say I believe – that my trust is unwaveringly in the Lord – and cast my cares on him. A life of integrity is a life of wholeness (which is, in fact, what the Latin root of the word means). It is a shining testimony to our children, friends, and colleagues that when it comes to our God, we can safely put our money where our mouth is.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, help me to pursue a life of integrity so that my actions reflect all that I proclaim about you. I know, as David knew, that you will never fail me. Amen.
Application
Take stock of your attitudes and actions for one day. If someone else were watching your life play out, would they see proof of your trust in God? Are you walking what you talk?
