Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – September 7, 2026
He [Jesus] said to them, “Therefore every scribe who has become a disciple of the kingdom of heaven is like the head of a household, who brings out of his treasure things that are new and fresh and things that are old and familiar.” Matthew 13:52, AMP
Purposeful followers of Jesus have a prayerful, measured urgency about the Kingdom of God. Just before our verse above, Jesus illustrates this focus on the Kingdom through three parables, namely the man who buys a field, the pearl of great price, and the haul of fish. In each example, our role as disciples is to seek out, find, and invest in the Lord’s Kingdom. Are you coasting, or is your life a daily, surrendered, Spirit-filled exercise in investing in eternity? If we are not intentional in our prayers and service, we risk becoming passive pawns of the culture. A life that strives for stuff instead of seeking first the Kingdom of God is building its own kingdom.
Just as a scribe is trained in the Law, so Jesus says He will train us as disciples in His Kingdom. A scribe was a Jewish scholar of the Old Testament, the guardian of the Old Covenant. Jesus reimagines the role: a scribe discipled by the kingdom does not discard the old; he brings out both the Old Covenant promises and the New Covenant fulfillment. Both flow from one treasure: Christ, the household’s true Master. What is the Spirit revealing to you?
We are wise not to fall under the tyranny of the urgent. What do I mean? Every matter needing attention can drive and distract us from God’s best. Our allegiance is not to the loudest voices; rather, we instruct our hearts to hear the still, small voice of the Spirit. Yes, the Kingdom of heaven is now, and the fields are white for harvest, so a Spirit-led sense of urgency is healthy for maturing disciples.
Ask the Holy Spirit to reset your sense of urgency. Not the frantic urgency of a hyperactive calendar, but the settled urgency of a servant who knows the King is at hand. Reach for the old treasures: a memory of God’s faithfulness, a mentor’s advice, a truth modeled by your parents. Reach for the new: a fresh word from Scripture, a nudge to text a struggling friend, a stirring to give beyond your budget. Both old and new belong. Say no to one urgent thing that is not eternal, such as someone who is unserious about faith. Refuse to coast. Refuse to sprint. Walk steadily, deliberately, and joyfully, in step with the Spirit. Have a sense of urgency about what matters most to Jesus.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, reset my urgency. Free me from the tyranny of the loud. Attune me to Your still, small voice. Draw old and new treasures from Your Word today. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Application
This morning, sit in silence for two minutes and ask: Lord, what is Your heart for today? Say no to one urgent thing. Say yes to one eternal thing, however small.
