Unite My Heart

Written by Tripp Prince

The love of God makes whole what we fracture and divide.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – March 12, 2026

Teach me Your way, O Lord; I will walk in Your truth; Unite my heart to fear Your name. Psalm 86:11, NKJV

Life is rarely an “all or nothing” situation. We are not all selfish or all kind. We are not entirely distracted or entirely present. We are not fully content or fully discontent. Instead, we most often find ourselves as living contradictions. We are cruel and merciful, joyful and despondent, selfish and self-giving. Saints and sinners, as it has often been said.

And yet, the aim and goal of our lives is to move from this contradiction and web of competing loves and desires into a way of life that is fully and completely oriented in a single direction. This is what the psalmist calls a “united heart.”

Our emotions and desires pull us in countless directions. There are many paths that are presented to us throughout our lives, each one calling out and saying, “Follow me, and I’ll lead you to peace and prosperity! Greener pastures are just around the corner!” Thus, the life of discipleship is a daily journey in which we learn to listen to the one voice that rings true above all others. This is not easily done, for the noise and chaos that surrounds us can feel overwhelming and all-consuming. Thus, we must cry out for help, “Teach me Your way, O Lord!”

The love of God makes whole what we fracture and divide.

There are parts of your life and chapters of your story that feel divided, broken beyond repair. It may be wounds you’ve received from others, or perhaps the guilt that haunts you from previous failures. When we are reminded of these divided parts of our hearts, the temptation is to try to sever them, cutting off the pain and shame. Yet like a beautiful tapestry, our Lord does not simply erase the broken bits of our story. No, he transforms them by reintegrating them into our hearts so every single part of our lives – the good, the bad, and the ugly – finds a place in the story of redemption he is telling over our lives and our world.

Prayer

Father, teach us afresh to walk in your ways, so that our hearts can be united and made whole, free of guilt and shame, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Application

When you’re tempted to bury the broken parts of your story, consider instead bringing them to the surface so the Lord can heal and transform them, making you whole as he does.
