Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – August 8, 2026
For first of all, when ye come together in the church, I hear that there be divisions among you; and I partly believe it. For there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you. 1 Corinthians 11:18-19, KJV
If you’ve ever been caught up in a division at church where well-meaning Christians simply can’t get along, you’re in good company! Relational conflict amongst those who follow Christ, sadly, is as old as time itself, and we find multiple examples within the New Testament. On the one hand, this should keep us from having rose-colored glasses on when we look back to the early church as though they had everything perfectly figured out and were without any challenges or trials. However, there is also great wisdom for us in learning from these examples. To the extent it is in our power, we can live in the light of Christ and in the freedom of his spirit that brings us together under his guiding hand, rather than perpetuating division and brokenness within the family of God.
In 1 Corinthians 11, Paul is aware of theological division in the church: heresies that are threatening the unity of this family of believers. What’s interesting to me is that he doesn’t immediately try and stamp it out. Nor is he surprised by the presence of these divisions. Look at what he says: “there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you.” It seems to me that sometimes we are too hasty in our rush to resolve conflict and find a quick resolution. The wisdom in Paul’s words is that true clarity on what’s going on in any given situation sometimes requires that all the parties involved make their thoughts and opinions known. In order to discern right from wrong, both wisdom and folly sometimes have to find their way to the surface so both can be clearly seen.
The kingdom of God is never in trouble. The Spirit of God is leading and directing his church and will guide it into all truth. It falls to us in every age to see that which is true and celebrate it, walk in it, and place our trust in that narrow way. And so whenever you find yourself in conflict at an interpersonal level or within your faith community, trust that that which is true and right will be made manifest in time. The Lord will always show his people the way. The question then is this: will we walk in it?
Prayer
Father, in our own lives and situations, may your truth be made manifest, and may you give us the courage to follow as you lead. We pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.
