“Few things reveal the state of our hearts better than our posture toward money.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – October 3, 2026
In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and understanding, he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, to be put into effect when the times reach their fulfillment—to bring unity to all things in heaven and on earth under Christ. Ephesians 1:7-10, NIV
What if you received a phone call this afternoon from a lawyer telling you that you are to receive a $1 million inheritance from a distant family member that you didn’t even know? How would you respond? Take a moment to think honestly about that question. Would an overwhelming sense of relief and joy flood your heart? Would you think all your worries and cares were washed away in a moment’s notice? Similarly, what would happen if you got a call this afternoon from your financial advisor telling you your investments have collapsed and, overnight, you’ve lost $1 million? What would that do to your spirit? Would fear and uncertainty overtake you? Would you spiral out of control and rage? Would you feel that all hope is lost?
Few things reveal the state of our hearts better than our posture toward money.
That’s why the Bible speaks about money so often, reminding us to keep our lives free from the love of money (Hebrews 13:5). We must be reminded of this every single day. We live in a world driven by money, and money determines our place in society, our sense of self-worth, and our security. Yet all of it is an illusion. Remember these words from the Psalms:
“Do not put your trust in princes,
in human beings, who cannot save.
When their spirit departs, they return to the ground;
on that very day their plans come to nothing.
Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob,
whose hope is in the Lord their God” (Psalm 146:3-5).
Part of staying free from the love of money is keeping our eyes set fully on the riches of God’s grace poured out in Jesus Christ. It isn’t just that we are free from money; we are free from money so we can be fully committed to Christ. Set your hope upon him today and remember that wealth in this life is fleeting, here today, and gone tomorrow. Yet life with Christ in his kingdom is an eternal reward that will never fade!
Prayer
Father, remind us of the true riches that are found in your abundant grace, and keep our hearts free from the love of money, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Application
Take time to give thanks to God today for the truth that in Christ you have everything you will ever need.
