Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – September 26, 2026
May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything; what counts is the new creation. Galatians 6:14-15, NIV
The crucifixion of Christ is meant to transform every part of your being. The cross crucifies the power of the world over us. It liberates us to love and give ourselves away, just as Christ gave himself for the life of the world. If we reduce the cross to a transaction between God and humanity, we miss its power to bring life where death once reigned.
Becoming a new creation in Christ is both a moment and a lifelong process. The Spirit of God begins the work of transformation in us in a decisive way through repentance and baptism and our embrace of the way of the cross. Yet this way of life must be renewed daily, where, in each and every moment, we choose to say that what matters most in my life (more than my money, or my prestige, or my education, or my influence) is the fact that I am a new creation that is being made new every single day.
The cross reveals to us the self-giving love of Jesus, and yet we will know if that self-giving love is transforming us to the extent that his way of life becomes our own.
As our Lord reminds us in John 13:35, “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples if you love one another.” This is the measure by which we can assess if we are, in fact, becoming the new creations that Paul speaks of. Is the love of God shown in Christ growing in us through demonstrable acts of self-giving love? Do I genuinely care for others today more than I did yesterday? Is this a primary goal for my life? If not, that’s the place to start. Ask the Lord today: “God, will you give me a love for others and free me from the smallness of self-love?”
Choose today to walk the way of the cross, for it is the way you and I become new creations, transformed by the power of God at work in us each and every day.
Prayer
Father, give me today a love for others that leads to life and renews and remakes me in the image and likeness of your Son. By your Spirit’s power at work in me, I pray. Amen.
