The Healing Touch

Written by Boyd Bailey

When you touch Jesus, healing love touches you to love generously!”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – October 13, 2025

And the whole multitude sought to touch Him, for power went out from Him and healed them all. Luke 6:19, NKJV

Everyday life brings pain. We are all exposed to physical, emotional, and spiritual hurt. Life causes unavoidable wounds—the chronic back pain that limits mobility, harsh words from a loved one that pierce the heart, and spiritual dryness that makes prayer feel empty. A cancer diagnosis shatters physical security. Job rejection triggers feelings of inadequacy. Betrayal by a trusted friend leaves emotional scars. Even minor daily frustrations—such as traffic jams, technology failures, or misunderstandings—add up to stress. Physical aging, relational conflicts, and spiritual struggles affect every human life. Pain may not be punishment, but it is part of our shared human experience that calls for grace, community, hope, and divine healing. Love heals.

You might say, back in the day, they could physically touch Jesus and be healed; how can I touch my Lord and Savior today? While we can’t physically touch Jesus as the disciples did, we encounter Him through spiritual means that are just as real. We touch Him through Scripture, where His words change hearts. Prayer becomes an intimate conversation where we sense His presence. Communion connects us to His sacrifice. Serving others reflects His hands and feet. Worship opens our hearts to His Spirit. The Christian community shows His body on earth. These spiritual touchpoints provide the same healing power—maybe even deeper—than physical contact once did. However, be aware that the healing touch is not a formula but an encounter.

A friend recently spoke healing words to my soul. “Boyd, I’m learning not to be offended when another ignores, dismisses, or is harsh with me. Instead of taking it personally, I see them with eyes of empathy, a heart broken, unhealed, in need of a touch of love.” Ah, yes, in that moment, his vulnerability intersected with my unhealthy guarded self. I felt the hem of my Master’s mercy. Healing with a righteous remedy is so necessary, since as a child, I felt dismissed and unimportant. A timely, wise word from a friend is like touching Jesus to receive comfort and care. Let’s be like my friend, a vessel for others to drink living water from the Lord. And, let’s humble our hearts to be healed by God’s voice through friends and foes alike. Love heals.

The first step is to admit you are wounded, and being vulnerable with your confession of weakness makes you a candidate for healing. Avoid being like the foolish person who refuses to go to the doctor, afraid of what they might hear from the expert. Our fear of not being in the loving presence of Jesus should fuel our faith to listen, discern, and accept His healing instructions. “My beloved, your unforgiveness is blocking our sweet communion. Forgive and trust Me to make things right. Your forgiveness frees you to explore and experience My love.” Or, the Holy Spirit may whisper in our willingness to reveal our deepest fears, “My precious beloved child, I am with you, fear not what people may do; instead, rest in my comfort and care.” Healing words indeed! When we go to Jesus to touch the hem of His holiness, He purifies our hearts to be whole. Like the old hymn says, “Something happened, and now I know He touched me, and made me whole.” When you touch Jesus, healing love touches you to love generously!

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds” (Psalm 147:3).

Prayer

Jesus, Your healing touch restores my soul, calms my fears, and mends my wounds. In Your presence, I find peace, strength, and wholeness—body, mind, and spirit renewed by Your love. In your name I pray, amen.
