Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – August 29, 2026
In fact, that first glory was not glorious at all compared with the overwhelming glory of the new way. So if the old way, which has been replaced, was glorious, how much more glorious is the new, which remains forever! 2 Corinthians 3:10-11, NLT
Sometimes, we don’t know there’s a better way until we see it. This is true in countless aspects of our lives. It’s only in hindsight that we realize we were in a dead-end job, and it took a new position to show us the difference. Our hearts can break over the collapse of a romantic relationship, and we convince ourselves we will never love again, only to find someone with whom we want to spend the rest of our lives and who shows us the nature of true love. As a kid, you think the pond in your neighborhood is the biggest body of water imaginable, only to encounter the ocean for the first time and have your entire world turned upside down.
It isn’t necessarily that the old ways or assumptions are wrong, but when you encounter the new way, it’s impossible to go back.
We live in a world that has been forever changed by the death and resurrection of Jesus, and there’s no going back. The incarnation cannot be undone. The self-giving love of Christ cannot be brushed aside. The triumph of the resurrection will never be outdone.
The people of God encountered his presence before Christ came. He guided his people and led them into places of peace. Yet as 2 Corinthians makes abundantly clear, that first glory was not glorious at all compared with the overwhelming glory of the new way. Any encounter with the presence of God is glorious, full stop. It brought kings to their knees and patriarchs face down before his presence. We marvel at God’s inbreaking in the world in the past, yet we are overwhelmed and undone by the unsurpassed glory that is revealed in Jesus Christ.
As Colossians 1:19 reminds us, “God in all his fullness was pleased to live in Christ” (NLT). Christ reigns supreme and will never be surpassed. In him is the fullness of glory, and in him our search is over. He is our beginning and our end, the one in whom we find our life and the reason for which we were made. Let us therefore walk in this new way and never look back.
Prayer
Father, we marvel at the glory revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord, and commit ourselves afresh to following as he leads, in the power of your Spirit. Amen.
Application
Meditate today on these powerful words from 2 Corinthians, giving thanks to God for the glory that is revealed in Christ.
