“In God’s love, stay faithful to follow Jesus with joyful obedience, and grace will show up in power.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – September 24, 2025
Evil-Merodach ascended to the Babylonian throne. He was kind to Jehoiachin and released him from prison on March 31 of that year. Jeremiah 52:31
King Jehoiachin’s life had been one long nightmare. At eighteen, he ruled Judah for exactly three months before Nebuchadnezzar took him to Babylon in chains. For thirty-seven years, he languished in prison, watching his youth slip away piece by piece. Then one day, everything changed. The guards came, but instead of the usual gruel, they carried royal robes. “The king wants to see you,” they said, and you thought, “This is it. I’m dead.” But Evil-Merodach didn’t execute you. Instead, he lifted you up, gave you a seat at his table, and put you on the royal payroll. Why? Maybe because he had been in prison too and understood what it felt like. Maybe because treating you well, kept your people in line.
Or maybe—and here’s where it gets interesting—God was pulling strings behind the scenes. Because keeping you alive meant preserving David’s lineage, which in turn meant keeping hope alive for a people who desperately needed it. Sometimes mercy comes from the most unexpected sources, through the most unlikely people. Even pagan kings can become vessels of divine grace. Injustice can feel like an endless, nightmarish dream with no end in sight, yet the Holy Spirit is working in ways we cannot see or comprehend. Then, out of nowhere, God’s grace arrives with generous gifts!
Do you find yourself backed into a corner with seemingly no options, with only a slender thread of hope? Don’t give up! “It’s hard to beat a person who never gives up.” (Babe Ruth). Most importantly, do not give up on God! Turn your hospital room into a cathedral of praise and worship, convert your financial malaise into an opportunity to give your way out of debt, or watch a relational rupture become the beginning of a long-overdue clearing of the air and the start of healing and relational health. Amazing grace will show up with amazing outcomes!
Like King Jehoichin, you may be surprised by grace for the sake of a larger divine story at work. From a biblical-theological perspective, this mercy wasn’t just politics—it was God preserving the Davidic line. Jeremiah 33:17 says: “David will never fail to have a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel.” By moving Evil-Merodach’s heart to free Jehoiachin, the Lord ensured the royal line would continue through him, eventually leading to Zerubbabel and then Jesus.
Your current struggles might serve purposes beyond your understanding. That job loss could position you in your sweet spot for a career change that impacts many lives for God’s Kingdom. The problematic relationship might build the patience needed for future ministry. Financial hardship can teach you stewardship principles that later become your legacy of generosity. Like Jehoiachin’s unexpected release, which preserved the Messianic line, God arranges circumstances for kingdom purposes that span generations. Your present pain may be preparation for a future calling, and your setbacks strategic positioning for His greater plan. In God’s love, stay faithful to follow Jesus with joyful obedience, and grace will show up in power.
“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9).
