“How we respond to everyday challenges is a window into our true character.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – June 20, 2026
Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong. 1 Corinthians 16:13, NKJV
My teenage daughter, who has only been driving for a couple of years, recently had an experience with a raging driver that she won’t soon forget. Sitting at a red light with a “no right turn on red” sign clear for all to see, the car behind her was insistent that she ignore this law and make the turn so they could get on with whatever they were so desperately needing to do. As such, to voice their extreme displeasure, the driver behind my daughter honked their horn for over 60 seconds straight, then, when the light changed, rushed past her in a moment of reckless chaos. Needless to say, this left my child upset and phased, feeling like they’d done something wrong.
Though it was a moment I wouldn’t have ever wished upon her, it was at the same time an opportunity to celebrate her response to the situation she found herself in. Simply put, she stood her ground and was able to stand fast in what was right even in the face of extreme pressure to do otherwise. And while the stakes here were relatively low, the way it revealed her character and strength is a moment I won’t soon forget.
How we respond to everyday challenges is a window into our true character. My daughter choosing to do what’s right at a red light gives me great hope and trust that when the pressure is far greater than an angry driver, the same character and fortitude will emerge, just as it did in this seemingly mundane moment.
Be attentive to how you react to the daily struggles you face. Do not dismiss little moments of anger, dishonesty, or jealousy as irrelevant or unrelated to “who you really are.” Faithfulness to the very end means we must cultivate a way of life that is rooted and steadfast in the way of Christ, especially when it doesn’t seem to matter.
Everything is connected, big and small, seen and unseen. By the grace of God at work in you, stand fast in the faith in every situation and scenario. As you do, you will discover the joy of living an integrated life that is fully submitted to Christ and his kingdom.
Prayer
Father, help us to stand fast in our faith, no matter what we face or how seemingly small the temptation may be, through Christ our Lord we pray. Amen.
Application
Be attentive today to the seemingly mundane temptations you face, and choose to stand firm in faith, no matter the cost.
