“Spiritual health is found when Christ is the lens through which we see the entire world.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – October 2, 2025
The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. Matthew 6:22, KJV
It’s amazing the difference one word can make.
In Matthew 6:22, we encounter a familiar passage from the ministry of Jesus, one in which he reminds us of the need to see the world through eyes that are enlightened by the light of his love. Most modern translations use the word “healthy,” or some variation of it – clear, good, sound. If your eyes are healthy, they are full of light. Yes and amen. However, how do we know if our eyes are clear? How do we know that what we think we see as light is, in fact, light?
Here, the venerable grandfather of English Bibles, the King James Version, offers great insight by offering an interesting alternative. “If therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.” According to the KJV, the goodness and health of our spiritual eyes are directly linked to them being…single? Let’s unpack this a bit.
It is remarkably easy to allow our attention to be drawn in a thousand different directions. We love the Lord, yes, but things like financial burdens, parental exhaustion, or health concerns also weigh us down and vie for our attention and affection. Similarly, we may actively serve on multiple boards, volunteer at a local nonprofit, and lead a ministry at church. These are all good and noble pursuits, yet if they are not born out of an eye that is singularly focused on Jesus Christ as the highest good and goal of life, they will become a distraction.
I am reminded of the story of Mary and Martha, and our Lord’s reminder to Martha’s troubled heart, “one thing is necessary” (Luke 10:42). One thing: singular vision. Spiritual health is found when Christ is the lens through which we see the entire world. Focus on him today, and your eyes will never fail you.
Prayer
Father, help us keep our eyes set fully upon you, so that they may be healthy and sound, showing us the world and ourselves as they truly are, that we may live in the light of your love every single day, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Application
Consider the distractions in your life that keep you from having singular vision.
