Seeing With Dove’s Eyes

Written by Pat Elsberry

Loving Jesus with dove’s eyes means allowing Him to see us fully while we keep our gaze steady, undivided, and fixed on Him.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – March 8, 2026

The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. Matthew 6:22

Do you ever find yourself getting easily distracted when you’re trying to read the Word or spend time with Jesus? In my commitment to read the Bible in a year, I’ve noticed something interesting—almost the moment I open my app to read, my mind goes into overdrive. Suddenly, I’m thinking about the calls I need to make, the emails waiting to be answered, or the writing I still need to accomplish. I’m not someone who naturally struggles with distraction, but when it’s time to read the Word, interruptions seem to appear out of nowhere—emails, text messages, and, of course, social media.

It got me thinking … I wish I had dove’s eyes. Did you know that doves are known for their singular focus? Once bonded, they do not wander from one to another. I had never really considered what it meant to have “dove’s eyes” until my friend, Martha Wilson shared this insight during a Bible study. Their unwavering devotion of one another mirrors the kind of love God desires from us—a heart that is not pulled in multiple directions and is easily distracted, but one that is steadily anchored in Him.

In the poetic language of the Song of Solomon, the Beloved is praised not first for her outward beauty, but for her eyes: “Your eyes are doves.” This description reaches far beyond appearance. It speaks to devotion, focus, and love that does not wander. God is a jealous God, and He desires to be first in our hearts. In a world overflowing with distraction, this often requires a deliberate shift—an intentional returning of our gaze to Him.

Dove’s eyes also represent gentleness and purity. They aren’t hardened by cynicism or clouded by fear. This kind of vision approaches God honestly, without masks or pretense. It is the posture of a heart that trusts Him enough to come as it is—bringing weakness, sorrow, longing, and questions into His presence. Loving Jesus with dove’s eyes means allowing Him to see us fully while we keep our gaze steady, undivided, and fixed on Him.

In a world filled with noise, distraction, and divided loyalties, cultivating dove’s eyes is a quiet but powerful act of devotion. It’s a daily choice to return our gaze to Jesus—to make Him our first love, our steady focus, and our deepest affection. When our eyes remain fixed on Him, our hearts are shaped by His love, our lives are guided by His truth, and our faith grows steadier with time.

“Behold, you are fair, my love! Behold, you are fair! You have dove’s eyes(Song of Solomon 1:15).

Prayer

Heavenly Father, quiet our hearts, and simplify our vision. Give us dove’s eyes—pure, gentle, and undivided, so that our hearts may remain fixed on You alone. Help us lay down distractions and competing affections, and teach us to see our lives through the leading of your Spirit. May our hearts be wholly devoted to you, today and always. Amen.

Application

Take a few quiet moments today to consider where your eyes have been fixed lately. Ask yourself, what has been loud or distracting to my heart? Then pause and intentionally turn your gaze back to Jesus asking Him to shift your vision and give you dove’s eyes.
