“We encounter God’s power when we are tuned to the rhythms of his grace.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – October 4, 2025
Immediately he made his disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd. And after he had taken leave of them, he went up on the mountain to pray. And when evening came, the boat was out on the sea, and he was alone on the land. Mark 6:45-47, ESV
Jesus walking on the water is one of the most well-known and beloved stories in the whole of the Bible, and for good reason. Here, the power of God is on full display, showing that Jesus is Lord of creation, calling the wind and waves to obey him as their Creator and Lord. Yet in the drama and intensity of this story, it is easy to overlook the verses that immediately precede it.
In Mark 6, as the disciples head out to sea, Jesus leaves them and goes “up on the mountain to pray.” This is a pattern in the life of Jesus that can be observed throughout the gospels. Yes, Jesus has many examples of bold and public ministry, calling crowds to repentance and teaching his disciples how to walk in the way of the kingdom, yet in between these moments our Lord can often be found in silence and solitude, communing with the Father and Holy Spirit in prayer. The same must be true of you and me.
If we long to see the power of God at work in our lives, our lives must first be defined by prayerful communion with the Lord.
Prayer precedes power, for God’s power is not something that can be captured and bottled up, like a tool in our toolkit to pull out whenever we think we might need it. No, God is the foundation and source of life itself, and we encounter his power when we are tuned to the rhythms of his grace. Though God is free to do whatever he wants, he delights in finding us abiding in him, longing for his kingdom to break into our world.
If you long for a deeper encounter of the power of God in your life and in the lives of those you love, commit yourself afresh to a life of intentional prayer, learning to dwell in the presence of God and find in him your true and eternal home.
Prayer
Father, we long to see your power at work in our world, but may we never forsake the primary call and invitation before us to dwell in your presence in prayer, for it is here that we are reminded of who we are and whose we are, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
