On Pilgrimage

Written by Tripp Prince

A pilgrimage is a journey infused with depth and meaning at every step.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – March 28, 2026

Blessed are those whose strength is in you, whose hearts are set on pilgrimage. Psalm 84:5, NIV

The Christian life is a journey. Yet it isn’t simply a journey; it’s best understood as a pilgrimage. This is, as we see in Psalm 84, a deeply biblical word and concept. To journey, in its simplest definition, is to move from point A to point B. Little time or thought is given to the experience of the journey or the formation that takes place along the way. A morning commute to school or a flight for a business meeting comes to mind. A pilgrimage, by contrast, is a journey infused with depth and meaning at every step. There is absolute clarity about the final destination, and that destination forms and shapes the journey along the way.

Christians have embraced this life of pilgrimage in concrete and historic ways. Most chiefly, this is seen as countless numbers of people walk the Via Dolorosa every year, walking the way of our Lord’s crucifixion in order to enter more fully into his suffering and passion. Yet from the Camino de Santiago in Spain to The Pilgrims’ Way in England, our world is filled with additional paths of pilgrimage, inviting people to enact in concrete and rooted ways the ultimate pilgrimage each of us is on as we journey from this life into the eternal kingdom of our Lord.

If you’ve never done so, I would encourage you to consider ways to see your entire life through this lens of pilgrimage. A pilgrimage isn’t simply something you do for a few days or weeks, though these types of pilgrimages are certainly beneficial. No, your entire life is meant to be one grand pilgrimage, for as the psalmist reminds us, we live a blessed life when our hearts are set on the singular destination of God himself, to know him and be known by him. Clarity on this one purpose in life will give you the strength to endure even the greatest trials, reminding you daily of your one and only source of true and lasting strength.

Prayer

Father, our hearts are set on pilgrimage with you, trusting that you meet us in the present and lead us to a great and glorious future, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
