“Maturing as a Christian isn’t about intellect but is the result of a transformed heart.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – June 2, 2026
For everyone who lives on milk is still an infant, inexperienced in the message of righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained their senses to distinguish good from evil. Hebrews 5:13-14
Recently, I found myself at the pet shop purchasing a tub of flightless fruit flies. This peculiar situation resulted from a venture my son and I set out upon to raise tadpoles into frogs. For months, we cast bits of spinach leaf into our aquarium and watched the hungry little tadpoles gobble it up. And then, lo and behold, one day we had a frog! I hadn’t anticipated that this new creature would need a completely different habitat and an entirely different diet. To our fascination, the moment that little tadpole sprouted legs, absorbed its tail, and started hopping onto land, it realized it wanted meat and knew exactly how to catch it. No more wriggling about under the water or nibbling algae. It knew it was a frog and it wanted to behave like one. The old diet was no longer suitable for this transformed creature.
The writer of Hebrews describes believers very much like tadpoles and frogs. There are those infant believers who live on milk– the basic understanding of the “message of righteousness” (or the Gospel), that salvation comes through Christ. And then there are those mature believers who have developed a stomach for meat – the more profound truths of the Gospel. The difference between the two, according to Scripture, is not a set amount of time, nor a checklist of good deeds, nor level of intellect, nor is it the number of theological degrees earned. Rather, a mature Christian is marked by behavior: “who by constant use have trained…” The mature believer is the one who has not just received the Gospel at head level, but has allowed it to take root in their hearts and transform them into new creatures who consequently behave very differently from the old self. They are the ones who, by faith, put God’s truth into constant practice and learn to see reality from God’s perspective. We might expect these new, transformed creatures to be hungry, just like our little frogs who couldn’t wait to digest something a little more toothsome than leaves. That hunger for solid Truth is a sure sign of a maturing Christian who humbly recognizes his need for the One who feeds him.
Prayer
Lord God, please give me an appetite for your Truth. May I be transformed by it into the Christ-like creature you desire me to be. May the meat of the Gospel strengthen me to do the good works you’ve given me to do. Amen.
Application
Read 1 Corinthians 3:1-3 and notice Paul’s list of signs that the church still needed a diet of milk. Are jealousy and quarreling present in your life or church community? Seek the Lord and the transforming power of his Gospel to help you mature beyond these old ways.
