Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – August 27, 2026
My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26, ESV
I heard a pastor recently comment on the need to connect our head and our heart as we seek to live out the Christian faith. I’ve heard a version of this more times than I can count, usually in the form of an exhortation to allow your heart to be filled with the fire of God, moving from a cold intellectualism into a burning desire for Christ and his Kingdom. Yet, somewhat surprisingly, the pastor was making the opposite point! Sometimes, he said, we need to get our hearts into our heads. Here’s what he meant.
As Scripture often reminds us, the heart is a fickle thing. Overflowing with passion, yes. But passion can be passionately misdirected! We can feel something deeply, even convince ourselves of its truth and trustworthiness, yet be led into deception and away from the path that leads to life.
Therefore, we need a rhythm of life that invites our hearts to check in regularly with our minds. And not simply check in, but to allow the truths that we cling to in our minds to shape and redirect our hearts. This, for example, is why we prioritize a daily habit of Bible reading and prayer. We may awaken with restless and unsettled hearts, filled with worry or fear, which, left unchecked, can overtake and shape every aspect of our day. The storm of our hearts needs to be settled in the stabilizing peace of God’s timeless truth. Similarly, every Sunday when we gather with the people of God, we are learning to have our hearts shaped by the truths in our heads. We declare truth in song and join in prayer with the Church throughout the ages, even and especially if our hearts aren’t in it.
If you only worshipped when you felt like it, your life as a Christian would be entirely dependent upon the ups and downs of your emotions, and that’s no way to live. No, root your mind in the unchanging truth of God, and when your heart wants to wander, get your heart into your head!
Prayer
Father, keep our hearts connected to our heads, that we may live integrated lives that are fully set upon you, through Christ our Lord we pray. Amen.
