Love Rejoices in Truth

Written by Boyd Bailey

Love and truth give birth to life.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – March 13, 2026

Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices in the truth. 1 Corinthians 13:6

Love and truth serve as the soul’s moral compass. They remind us that love isn’t a neutral, passive emotion that accepts everything; rather, it’s a discerning voice that takes a stand. Love, powered by the Spirit, has a taste for what is good and a revulsion for what is destructive. To love truly is to align our heart’s delight with our Creator’s heart. In love’s sight, evil is wicked because it seeks to diminish, devalue, and destroy what God has made. The direction of our lives is determined by the object of our delight. The Psalmist declares, “Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart” (Psalm 37:4). Delighting in the Lord is a heart so captivated by God that it becomes soft and responsive to His touch rather than hardened by evil.

The human heart is a factory of desires, capable of producing both the noble and the nefarious. Your heart’s output depends entirely on what you make your primary delight. Love delights in the Lord. Therefore, God becomes your standard and the ultimate judge of your motivations. When He’s the source of your joy, His delight becomes your magnetic north, guiding you to do what’s right, even when it’s difficult. This is why guarding your delights matters. What entertains you? What captivates your attention? What makes you smile or cry? These seemingly small choices reveal where your heart finds pleasure and ultimately determine your direction.

In contrast to evil’s deceptive nature, love is truth’s inseparable companion. There’s an energizing joy in being and doing the right thing. When truth and love cooperate, they create an ecosystem where life can flourish. Truth creates the environment in which love can be safe, while love provides the grace needed for truth to be spoken and received. Together, they are two essential ingredients of any healthy relationship. Be wise not to blend love and truth in unhealthy ways. One deception is “Love without Truth”: a “nice” sentiment that refuses to acknowledge reality, eventually leading to enabling and disaster. You’re not helping someone by pretending their destructive patterns are acceptable. That’s not love; it’s cowardice disguised as kindness. Another unhealthy blend is Truth without Love”: a “cold” fact that rejects, crushing the spirit without offering a way home. You can be technically correct while being relationally destructive.

When these two forces unite, they lay the foundation of trust and respect, the bedrock of authentic love. Truth keeps the relationship grounded in reality, while love keeps it grounded in mercy. To “rejoice in the truth” means more than just not lying; it means being a cheerleader for what is right. It means celebrating when a friend overcomes an unhealthy habit, rejoicing when justice is served, and finding joy in others’ integrity. Love’s high road pursues timeless truth.

Love rejoices in truth because truth liberates. Truth heals and transforms. When truth and love walk together, marriages thrive, friendships deepen, communities flourish, and the Kingdom advances. So, guard your delights. Delight in God. Rejoice in truth. Refuse to take pleasure in evil, even when others applaud it. Become someone whose moral compass consistently points toward what is good, true, beautiful, and worthy of celebration. Love and truth give birth to life.

“Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good” (Romans 12:9).

Prayer

Lord, tune my heart to Your love frequency. May I find no joy in what is wrong, but let my soul leap with celebration whenever Your truth prevails in my life and others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
