Love Protects: Gospel Focused

Written by Boyd Bailey

Love protects from pride and moves toward humble faith.”

Love always protects. 1 Corinthians 13:7

Love always protects is often romanticized as heroic, momentary bravery. However, in a life lived for Christ, protection is more often quiet, disciplined stewardship. It’s the active expression of caring enough to look ahead. When you protect, you’re declaring that the people in your care are too valuable to be left to chance. In her poem “Touched by an Angel,” Maya Angelou describes how love arrives to liberate us from fear, acting as a protective force that allows the soul to finally be safe. “Love arrives / and in its train come ecstasies / old memories of pleasure / ancient histories of pain. / Yet if we are bold, / love strikes away the chains of fear / from our souls.”

Love protects by striking away the “fear” that prevents others from seeing Christ. It creates a sanctuary where the “ancient histories of pain” are no longer the primary focus. True protection begins with a realistic view of the future. As the saying goes, the only knowns in this life are death and taxes. While these topics are often avoided, love leans into them. Planning protects by preparing for both known and unknown risks. It’s an act of deep affection to ensure those we leave behind aren’t burdened by our lack of foresight. The most vital form of this preparation is spiritual protection. You love people most when you help them prepare for eternity. This isn’t done through coercion, but through consistent, loving investment. By modeling Jesus Christ’s character, you create a shield of influence that helps others see the Gospel’s reality. Protecting their eternal interest means ensuring they have the opportunity to hear and understand the Good News in a timely and compassionate fashion. This is the highest form of “best interest.” What good is financial security if they’re spiritually bankrupt? What profit is temporal comfort if they face eternal separation from God? Love protects from pride and moves toward humble faith.

Another essential layer of this command is financial protection. In a world that views money through the lens of greed or consumption, the believer sees it through the lens of protection. When you plan financially for your family, you’re not merely accumulating—you’re lovingly shielding. This protection is rooted in the understanding that God is the owner and you are the steward. By applying His principles of giving generously, saving consistently, and avoiding the shackles of debt, you create an environment of security. Giving: Protects the heart from the cancer of greed. When you give, you declare that God—not money—is your security. You protect yourself from idolatry while also protecting others through generosity. Saving: Protects the family from the volatility of an uncertain world. Proverbs 21:20 declares, “The wise store up choice food and olive oil, but fools gulp theirs down.” Saving is wisdom, not hoarding. It’s about protecting future needs while trusting God’s provision. Avoiding Debt: Protects your future freedom to serve God. Proverbs 22:7 warns, “The borrower is slave to the lender.” Debt enslaves. Freedom liberates you to respond to God’s calling without financial chains.

In the end, we protect because we have been protected by the One who is our “Refuge and Strength” (Psalm 46:1). God protected us eternally through Christ’s sacrifice. He protects us daily through His provision. We mirror His protective love by planning wisely, giving generously, saving consistently, and pointing others toward eternal security. Love always protects: spiritually, financially, practically. That’s wisdom. That’s love in action.

“He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart” (Psalm 91:4).

Prayer

Lord, help me to be a ‘fixed mark’ for my family. Give me the wisdom to build walls of protection and the grace to point them toward the ultimate Star, Jesus Christ. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Application
