Love Is Kind: Radical Care

Written by Boyd Bailey

Pursue others with the same generous kindness the Spirit showed you.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – February 18, 2026

Love is kind.  1 Corinthians 13:4

Love is kind. The phrase is quoted at weddings, embroidered on pillows, and painted on farmhouse signs, reduced to a gentle sentiment. But biblical kindness is a radical, transformative force. Kindness is love’s active, visible hand. While patience is how love endures trials, kindness is how love responds to people. In the Old Testament, the word often translated as kindness is Chesed. This isn’t just a feeling; it is “covenant loyalty.” It is the kind of love that refuses to give up on someone. When you show kindness to a friend or spouse, you are practicing chesed, staying true to them because God stays true to you. Kind love looks for ways to make a way.

My wife, Rita, and I gathered at a friend’s home last night to meet five young couples who are in the early stages of learning to be kind to one another and to their small children. There was a refreshing theme of love and respect being nurtured through communal care and concern. Exhaustion from sleep deprivation and being overworked competed with their kindness toward one another. We discussed the wisdom of recognizing HALT (Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired). When any of the conditions are present, take the time to be kind and wait to have hard conversations until a meal is finished, emotions have cooled, you’ve had time to reconnect from feeling alone, or you’ve gotten a good night’s sleep. Kindness gives grace to wait for a better time to work through hard things. You love well when you care for another’s hurting heart.

Kindness is our heavenly Father’s hallmark. He’s kind even when we don’t deserve it. His kindness isn’t a reward for good behavior; it’s the catalyst for our repentance. Romans 2:4 asks, “Do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, forbearance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you toward repentance?” God’s kindness isn’t passive tolerance. It’s an active pursuit. He’s always there to listen, care, and accept us in our brokenness. This divine kindness creates space where we’re not just tolerated but cherished, not barely accepted but deeply loved. Divine kindness isn’t cheap. The Bible reminds us that God shows mercy “for Christ’s sake.” The kindness we enjoy today was paved by the suffering of the Cross.

God’s kindness toward us becomes both our motivation and our model. Ephesians 4:32 commands: “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” Notice the pattern: divine kindness precedes ours. We don’t create kindness through willpower; we reflect the kindness we’ve received. The more deeply you grasp the Lord’s undeserved kindness toward you, the more naturally kindness flows toward others.

Love is kind. Not occasionally. Not selectively. Not when convenient. Kindness is love’s constant posture: honoring others, creating safety, offering respect without prerequisites, and accepting without agendas. This is radical living in a world built on earning, proving, and performing. Kindness says, “You’re valuable simply because you exist. You matter because God made you. You’re safe here.” So let your eyes speak kindness before your mouth does. Create an atmosphere where people drop their defenses and discover acceptance. Pursue others with the same generous kindness the Spirit showed you. Love is kind, leading to repentance and healing.

“What does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” (Micah 6:8, ESV)
