“Letting go of control isn’t about giving up—it’s about giving over.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – May 10, 2026
Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Matthew 6:34
There’s a quiet comfort in holding the reins tightly. We plan, prepare, and try to manage every detail, believing that if we can just keep everything in order, we might avoid the unexpected pain or uncertainty life so often brings. For those of us who have walked through loss or deep disappointment, control can feel like protection… like a way to steady what once unraveled.
But control is a fragile illusion.
The more we try to hold everything together, the more we begin to feel the weight of it all. Our hands grow tired. Our hearts grow anxious. And somewhere along the way, we forget that we were never meant to carry it all in the first place.
Scripture gently calls us to remember: “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7).
All means all. Not just the parts we can’t fix—but even the parts we think we can.
Letting go of control isn’t about giving up—it’s about giving over. It’s choosing to trust that God sees what we cannot, that He is working in ways we don’t yet understand, and that His plans are not only higher… they are good.
Even Jesus, in the Garden of Gethsemane, surrendered what was ahead of Him with these words: “Not my will, but Yours be done” (Luke 22:42). If surrender was the pathway for Him, it will be for us too.
There is a quiet freedom waiting on the other side of release. When we open our hands, we make room for God to move. When we loosen our grip, we allow His peace to take the place of our striving.
Friend, you don’t have to hold it all together today. God already is.
“And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together” (Colossians 1:17).
Prayer
Heavenly Father, you see the weight I carry and the things I try so hard to control. You know the fears that keep my hands clenched tight. Today, I choose to release them to you. Teach me to trust you more and to believe that you are working even when I cannot see it. Help me to rest in your goodness and walk in your peace. Remind me that I am safe in your hands, even when life feels uncertain. Not my will, but yours be done. Amen.
Application
Take a moment to pause and reflect: What are you holding onto tightly right now? Name it honestly before the Lord. Then, in a simple act of surrender, open your hands, physically if you can, and pray over each concern, releasing it into His care. Return to this practice daily, trusting that surrender is not a one-time moment, but a continual invitation to rest in Him.
