“If we want to be with Jesus, we’re going to have to go where he is.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – February 14, 2026
So Jesus also suffered outside the gate in order to sanctify the people through his own blood. Therefore let us go to him outside the camp and bear the reproach he endured. For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come. Hebrews 13:12-14, ESV
If we want to be with Jesus, we’re going to have to go where he is.
Yes, he comes to us, thanks be to God. He meets us in our weakness and heals our every wound. Yet if we are lost in vanity, self-preservation, or anxiety, these are not “homes” in which he dwells, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble” (1 Peter 5:5). He comes to us in order to draw us out, out of ourselves and into the world that he is actively liberating from sin and healing from sickness. If we want to be with our Lord, this is where we must be willing to go.
From the people of God in the wilderness to American pioneers on the frontier, “camp” is a picture of safety and security. Circle the wagons and stay close to the fire. Keep the wild animals out and huddle close to those you know and love. This is a comforting and natural posture, yet if it is the only way in which we engage the world, we will fail to enter into the adventure of faith that draws us out of ourselves and into the brokenness of our world, not to break us, but to join the Lord in his mission of renewal and restoration.
Like a courageous general leading the charge in battle, Our Lord Jesus has paved the way “through his own blood.” With hope and gratitude in our hearts, we are now invited to join the ranks and offer our own lives in his name, for we know that our ultimate hope and source of joy is never found in the fleeting comforts of this life, for here “we have no lasting city,” but instead daily turn our hearts and minds toward “the city that is to come.”
Prayer
Father, give us the courage to follow Jesus as he leads, finding him and joining him in mission outside the camp, in the power of your Spirit we pray. Amen.
Application
Are there ways you have asked Jesus to dwell with you in your brokenness, when instead he is asking you to walk in his healing and join him where he can be found?
