Learning by Doing

Written by Tripp Prince

The Christian life is a dynamic relationship of discovery and exploration.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – December 27, 2025

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. Ephesians 5:8-10, NKJV

A friend of mine used to say, “It’s easier to tell where a train is going once it has left the station.” He frequently applied this image to the need for discernment in life, seeking to understand God’s will and ways. In essence, he was saying, “Take a step in the right direction, and from there you’ll be able to see the next right step.”

Scripture invites us to lead holy lives that are pleasing to God, and though I do believe there is a longing to know God deep within every human heart, due to sin and the brokenness of our world, it is not always clear or immediately evident how one goes about living this kind of life. If you’ve ever felt this way, do not despair! This is by design, for there is incredible goodness to be found in the process of discovery.

Like a child hitting developmental milestones, you and I become the men and women we were made to be by learning as we go. As St. Paul says in today’s passage, we are meant to find out “what is acceptable to the Lord.” The Christian life is a dynamic relationship of discovery and exploration. We walk with the Spirit day in and day out, and it is in that relationship of abiding communion that the will of God comes to be known.

The Lord does not rush the process of healing and restoration, and neither should we. When we said “yes” to the life of discipleship, we were beginning a process that has no end! We will for all eternity enter more deeply and fully into the life of the Spirit, so be kind to yourself in the present moment, and simply do the next right thing, learning by doing.

Prayer

Father, give us the grace to follow you today, discerning and learning what is good and right and true, that we may continue on the path that leads to life, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Application
