“The seemingly mundane details of daily life are filled with heavenly potential.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – January 10, 2026
And He went through the cities and villages, teaching, and journeying toward Jerusalem. Luke 13:22, NKJV
My wife and I recently had the immense privilege of touring St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. As is often the case on any tour, our guide began in the square outside the church, orienting us, not only to the physical space, but to the theological significance the space was meant to convey. He explained to us that the entire experience was meant to signify the journey into the kingdom of God, the heavenly Jerusalem, where we are received with open arms and welcomed into the presence of our loving Savior. As you proceed through the square, statues of the heroes of faith that have gone ahead of us surround you on every side, in a sense looking down in celebration, crying out, “Welcome! You’ve made it! Your journey is complete!”
Though our tour eventually came to an end and we continued our exploration of the city, this vision of the heavenly city moved me greatly, for it contains a deep truth meant to shape the whole of our lives on earth. We must have clarity on where we are headed if we want to arrive at our intended destination.
Of course, on the one hand, this sounds remarkably obvious, yet sometimes the most significant truths are the ones that are, in their simplicity, the easiest to miss! The seemingly mundane details of daily life are filled with heavenly potential. Each passing moment offers us an invitation to take a step, simple as it may be, toward the heavenly Jerusalem, aligning our lives here in the present with the virtues and values of eternity. This is meant to be the orientation of our entire lives, a path from which we never depart. And thanks be to God, he is with us every step of the way, strengthening and renewing us so that we, too, like the countless saints who have gone ahead of us, may on our last day be welcomed into our eternal home.
Prayer
Father, keep our hearts set fully upon your coming kingdom, that we may daily journey toward the heavenly Jerusalem, we pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.
