He Goes Before You

Written by Shana Schutte

He goes before us to show us the way and He will never leave us alone.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – June 25, 2023

I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds. Psalm 9:1

Last week my husband, Clark, drove me to the top of a mountain near our home so I could ride my bike down a paved path to a lake below.

Before I started my adventure, I asked Clark for instructions on where to turn after I got to the bottom of the mountain. He slowly gave me directions because he knows that I have a penchant for getting lost. Then, I started my descent and I felt like I was flying! I was completely exhilarated. There is nothing like biking through the pines!

When I arrived at the bottom, I became confused for a moment. Should I turn or should I go straight? Then I looked to the right. What a surprise! There was my beloved husband waiting for me across the road. He gave me a thumbs up and yelled out the car window, “Great job! Now turn left here!” He pointed with his left hand, and I started down another part of the path to begin to make my way around the lake.  As I rode along, I thanked God for such a wonderful mate. How did I get so blessed?

I was getting fatigued and realized I probably hadn’t eaten enough that morning and still had at least another hour to ride up and down hills. I decided to challenge myself, keep going and finish. Then, just as I rounded a curve, there was my husband again. He had pulled into a parking lot along the bike path and was waiting for me once more. I smiled and he waved.

“I’m your support team!” he shouted.

“Thank you! You’re so sweet!” I said, feeling thankful as I approached him. “I’m tired. I don’t think I ate enough this morning.”

“Do you want a snack? I’ll get you one and find you later.”

He drove away and after about 15 minutes passed, I started to ascend a hill. There he was again, waiting for me, waving me toward him with a box of crackers in hand. What a thoughtful guy!

Four more times Clark waited for me at different points on the path to encourage me to keep going when I was getting tired, to show me the way again when I wasn’t sure which way to go, and to pick me up when I was ready to go home.

My joyful biking experience reminded me of how the Lord tenderly cares for us.

He goes before us to show us the way and He will never leave us alone, therefore, we can always have hope.

“The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged” (Deuteronomy 31:8).

“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you” (Psalm 32:8).

He encourages us by reminding us that all things are possible with Him.

“Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26).

He provides all that we need and gives us the strength to keep going.

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10).

And, when it’s time to go Home, He’ll pick us up and take us with Him to heaven.

“My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am” (John 14:2-3).

What a wonderful God!

“The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves” (Zephaniah 3:17).

Prayer

Lord, thank you for always being with me, caring for me and taking care of me. I am so glad that you show me the way, encourage me, and give me what I need when I need it. Thank you, too, that you will take me to heaven when my time here is done. Amen.
