“Contentment comes by recognizing God’s bounty and valuing the boundaries he’s set around us.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – October 20, 2026
LORD, you alone are my portion and my cup;
you make my lot secure.
The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
surely I have a delightful inheritance. Psalm 16:5-6
David knew something about land when he wrote Psalm 16. After all, he worked as a shepherd feeding his flock within the boundary lines of his father Jesse’s lands for years before leading the flock of Israel. A person’s lot – their allotted portion of land – was everything: their sustenance, their children’s inheritance, their safety. To have a good lot guarded by set boundary lines meant a family could prosper and flourish… so long as those living on the land valued and tended their portion faithfully rather than coveting another’s lot to the neglect of their own. David writes as one who knows the deep contentment that comes from receiving a good portion with gratitude and working within its boundaries faithfully.
Fast forward to our own time and place. God has given us so much (“in him we live and move and have our being” Acts 17:28!), but so many of us struggle fully to receive and enjoy his gifts. To grant grace to our plight, we do live in a culture that undermines contentment at every turn. Endless options afflict us with the panicked sense of always missing out; new and improved gadgets make us feel behind the times; social media imposes a sense of unfairness that everyone else’s lives seem so charmed and polished while ours are humdrum. The commercial world doesn’t want you or me to feel a second’s contentment, and neither does our spiritual enemy. But if we are not to allow the world and the devil to rob us of the contentment God intended to be our birthright as His children, we must do the work of putting on our spiritual armour and fighting back.
The first punch we throw is that of gratitude, making a constant practice of recognising the good God has poured out in our lives. Resist the temptation to be like the Israelites wandering in the desert who could not receive their promised land because of their hard, grumbling hearts. Cultivate contentment by celebrating the good portion you’ve been given. The second punch we throw is that of living within our boundary lines, putting aside covetousness and trusting that our Good Shepherd delights to give us what is good and right for us in its right season. Within the boundaries God has placed around our lives, we can give our attention and affection to the good work He has given us to do without the constant nagging of a “grass is greener” mentality. But our ultimate victory is won when we, like David, recognize that, beyond all material things, our portion is the Lord himself. Nothing must replace him, for nothing else will satisfy. It is in Christ that our lives and our material portions are enlivened with meaning. He is himself our delightful inheritance and our pleasant boundaries.
Prayer
Lord Christ, heal me of discontent and teach me to delight myself in you, my delightful inheritance, more and more each day. Amen.
Application
Look for areas in your life where discontent or covetousness may have crept in. Take these matters to the Lord and ask him to give you a grateful heart for the boundary lines He has placed around you in love.
