Follow the Pattern

Written by Tripp Prince

There is a pattern of faithful living that transcends time and place.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – January 3, 2026

Follow the pattern of the sound words that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the good deposit entrusted to you. 2 Timothy 1:13-14, ESV

Over the years, I’ve heard people dismiss the wisdom and insight of the Bible as “primitive” or “irrelevant to our modern age.” This line of thinking accepts the idea that, in many ways, we as a species have evolved so dramatically that what was once true is no longer binding on us as a people or society. If Paul or Jesus, for example, knew what we know now, clearly they wouldn’t have said what they said.

While it is true that Jesus never used an iPhone and Paul couldn’t possibly fathom space travel, let alone airplanes, it is wildly shortsighted and arrogant of our modern age to assume that the Scriptures are only relevant to the time and place in which they were first written. They have nurtured and sustained vibrant Christian communities of faith in literally every corner of the world across time and space. Let us never assume we are the lone exception!

Instead, I am drawn to a phrase in Paul’s guidance to his spiritual son, Timothy, exhorting him to “follow the pattern of the sound words that you have heard from me.” Even within the same culture and context, Paul and Timothy did not live identical lives, and the specific details of their day-to-day lives were as varied as mine are from yours. Paul couldn’t simply say, “at this time do this every day, and at that time do that.”

The Christian faith is not simply a one-size-fits-all commandment but is a living relationship discerned in community.

No matter how different and diverse the details of our lives may be, there is a pattern of faithful living that transcends time and place. And so if you ever find yourself tempted to dismiss something in the Bible as culturally antiquated or irrelevant, do the harder work of pressing in and ask yourself, “What is the timeless pattern of belief and practice that this specific situation points to?” It is here in this work of discernment that a timeless faith can be found, helping us discover God’s unchanging truth for our ever-changing world.

Prayer

Father, help us to be faithful, biblical Christians, clinging to that which is timeless and true, no matter what our changing world brings our way, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
