Fellow Citizens

Written by Tripp Prince

“In the family of God, there is always room for one more.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – October 10, 2026

Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone. Ephesians 2:19-20, NKJV

Whenever I’ve traveled internationally, no matter how beautiful the country or how deeply it resonates with my heart and soul, I’m acutely aware of the fact that I don’t belong to this place. If we speak a different language, this becomes immediately apparent. But it’s true on a deeper level as well. I don’t know their history or their heroes, the virtues and values that shape and inform their collective identity. In every way I am a guest and onlooker, or as Paul puts it today, a “stranger and foreigner.”

In the early days of the Church, this was the most significant issue the early followers of Jesus had to navigate. Jesus was a Jew who came to deliver the Jewish people, God’s chosen people, yet at every step of the way he radically redefined what it meant to be a member of the family of God. No longer was it defined by ethnicity or circumcision, but instead he became the measure of belonging. If “Jesus Christ Himself (is) the chief cornerstone,” then everything and everyone – Jew and Gentile alike – finds its place when it is built upon him.

Though the centuries have reshaped the Church’s ethnic realities and today’s questions look a bit different than they did 2,000 years ago, these words still carry a timeless message for each of us to embrace. Our Lord is inviting us, whoever you may be, to enter his kingdom as a citizen with all the rights and responsibilities that come along with it. A Gentile is no less a citizen than a Jew. And in our own age, someone who comes to Christ late in life is no less a Christian than someone born into a multi-generational believing family. If you belong to Christ, you belong in his Kingdom. If you have responded to his love in faith and repentance, you have a seat at his eternal table.

In the family of God, there is always room for one more. There is always a seat set, a room waiting, and a passport with your name on it. Embrace this truth today, and live as a beloved child and honorable citizen of the one true King.

Prayer

Father, as those welcomed to dine at your table, no matter where we’ve come from, may we live with grateful hearts today that respond to your love with virtuous living and unwavering allegiance to your Kingdom, through Christ our Lord we pray. Amen.
