“Endurance is energized when your faith and hope are anchored in someone bigger than yourself: Jesus Christ.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – September 28, 2026
Who for the joy set before Him, endured the cross. Hebrews 12:2
Several years ago, I sat in the movie theater, mesmerized by the story of Ernest Shackleton and his 1912 expedition to Antarctica, where 27 men aboard the ship Endurance were trapped in ice. The ship drifted for ten months before the ice slowly crushed its hull. What became a 634-day ordeal is a case study in endurance. The lessons from the Endurance apply to our hard situations.
First, stay focused on the mission, just as Jesus looked to the joy of fulfilling His Father’s will. Shackleton restated their purpose of making it home: “Ship and stores have gone, so now we’ll go home.” By embracing a unified purpose, shared endurance becomes survival. Second, you set the emotional temperature. Calm discipline and steady faith help others follow your example. Emotions submit to endurance. Shackleton often walked the ice to check morale, offering encouragement with humble boldness. He was often afraid, but he kept it private and stayed calm in public.
Thirdly, keep the ordinary rhythms that remind you of who you are and who God is. Your daily bread of prayer, worship, and Scripture becomes a testament to the Lord’s faithfulness. The men of the Endurance kept diaries, played football on the ice, and sang at night.
Fourthly, reimagine your time horizon. The men did not think about surviving 634 days; they invested energy in today’s meal, today’s task, and today’s survival. You make it through today, and in the end you have endured. As Jesus wisely stated, “Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own” (Matthew 6:34). Fifthly, the body follows your spirit and will. Inner focus on God’s goodness and your will to endure by His grace give your body strength to overcome. Endurance does not give up!
Most importantly, endurance is energized when your faith and hope are anchored in someone bigger than yourself: Jesus Christ. Crossing ice-capped peaks, Shackleton later wrote, “I know that during that long and racking march of thirty-six hours over the unnamed mountains and glaciers of South Georgia, it seemed to me often that we were four, not three.” Like the fourth man in the fiery furnace with the three Hebrew young men, so the Lord walks with you through the valley of the shadow of death. Stay fixed on Jesus in the Word, worship, and prayer. Because He endured, you can endure. This too shall pass.
“He said, ‘Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods’” (Daniel 3:25).
Prayer
Heavenly Father, fix my eyes on Jesus. When the circumstances close in, and the horizon disappears, remind me the Fourth Man walks beside me. Grant grace for today. This too shall pass. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Application
Today, shorten your horizon. Do the next right thing: one prayer, one meal, one call, one task. Refuse to spend today’s grace on tomorrow’s worry. Endure with joy fixed ahead.
