“If our faith is only surface-level, our healing will be only surface-level.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – September 19, 2026
He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” Mark 4:39-40, NIV
I recently heard a pastor answer the question, “Why do you believe in the resurrection of Jesus?” His answer was as honest as I’ve heard in a long time: “Because my parents believed in the resurrection of Jesus.” This resonated with me deeply, for in truth, it is the answer I would give as well. I was born into a family of faith and was told from day one about the love of God in Jesus. I saw love embodied in real, tangible ways in the lives of my parents, my extended family, and our faith community. I was raised in the faith, have seen that faith confirmed in countless ways, and yet when I read our Lord’s words in Mark 4, they still pierce my soul and convict me deeply. “Do you still have no faith?”
No matter how far we have come in our life with Christ, there is always further to go. In fact, our faith will deepen and grow for all of eternity, for we will never reach an end of the love of God or a point at which we have exhausted his goodness and mercy.
This isn’t a source of discouragement but should instead be deeply encouraging to us. The disciples had seen Jesus work miracles that no one else in history had ever done or could ever do, and yet, when caught at sea in a storm, doubts arose, and their faith began to falter. Jesus does not shame them, but in his question he invites them to journey with him more fully.
Has the love of God in Christ transformed your greatest desires and healed your most painful wounds? If our faith is only surface-level, our healing will be only surface-level. Yet our Lord wants our life of faith in him to transform us in every possible way. That is the invitation that stands before us right here and right now. Will we have the faith to trust him in every situation, knowing and believing that if he is with us, there is nothing to fear?
Prayer
Father, deepen in us our faith and trust in the power of Christ at work within us and in our world, and draw us more fully into the life of your kingdom. Day by day we pray. Amen.
