Daily Discernment

Written by Tripp Prince

Discipleship is a daily encounter with the Holy Spirit.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – February 5, 2026

And when they bring you before the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities, do not be anxious about how you should defend yourself or what you should say, for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say. Luke 12:11-12, ESV

I find it is tempting for me to get lost in the “what if” questions of life. Sometimes these are positive: “What if I get that promotion?” or “What if we someday could live there?” Yet in truth, perhaps by temperament, I more often get caught up in the anxiety-inducing form of “what ifs”: “What if I lose my job?” “What if my kids walk away from the faith?” “What if our church family is rocked by scandal or division?” What if…what if…what if…

Into this storm of anxiety and confusion, our Lord speaks a clarifying word of peace, reminding us of the default posture that should define our way of life and view of the world. Discipleship is a daily encounter of the Holy Spirit, and it is in and through our abiding life with him that we are able to face whatever the day may bring. Like the Lord’s daily provision of manna for his people in the wilderness (Exodus 16:4), we too must trust that he gives us exactly what we need for whatever is at hand in the present moment.

This isn’t to say that all future thought or planning should be discarded. Clearly, there is wisdom in foresight and discernment for what the future may hold. Yet Scripture reminds us time and time again to hold these plans loosely! As Proverbs 19:21 states, “Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.” You and I cannot know with any degree of certainty what will happen in 5 or 10 years, let alone next week or even tomorrow! Yet what we do have is this present moment, right here and now.

As you read these words, are you abiding in the life of the Spirit? Are you open and attentive to his still small voice, leading and guiding you through whatever this day may hold? Since all things are perfectly under his care, we are free to live in perfect peace, knowing that whatever we need will be shown to us by the Spirit in the “very hour” that we need it.

Prayer

Father, help us to daily discern your voice and presence with us, trusting that you will provide all that we need for this present moment, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Application

How is the Spirit speaking and leading you into a life of faithful discipleship in this present moment?
