“The Christian life requires daily attentiveness.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – April 11, 2026
Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God; but exhort one another daily, while it is called “Today,” lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. Hebrews 3:12-13, NKJV
The longer you neglect something, the harder it is to pick it back up. If you neglect your garden for one day, then another and another, at some point, you abandon it to the weeds and wave the white flag of surrender. When you skip your workout once, and then twice, before you know it, you’ve cancelled your gym membership and tell yourself you’ll pick it back up when there’s more time. When this week’s neglected laundry gets added to last week’s, eventually the pile becomes a mountain that you wonder if you’ll ever be able to conquer!
The Christian life requires daily attentiveness. As we see in Hebrews 3, we are encouraged to “exhort one another daily.” The thing I love about daily exhortation is that it isn’t dependent upon our emotions or feelings on any given day. If we feel close to the Lord and courageous in our faith, like we could move mountains in his name, guess what? We still need exhortation and encouragement to be reminded to turn to him in surrender and trust.
Daily practices such as Bible reading, prayer, fasting, and service sustain our faith through whatever ups and downs come our way. If you only turn to God when you feel like it, your faith will be shallow and easily forgotten. And if he is only on your heart and mind in times of great desperation and despair, you will miss the joy of daily communion, friendship with the Lord that comes through an abiding relationship of love.
Like a careful gardener or disciplined athlete, commit yourself afresh to a daily encounter with the Lord. In this way, your faith will be nourished in all seasons, and you will know a joy that cannot be shaken. Follow Christ daily, and every day will be transformed by the gift of his presence.
Prayer
Father, help us to seek you daily so that we may know the gift of your presence in each and every season, we pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.
