“There is only one King to whom you bow and only one kingdom to which you ultimately and truly belong.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – April 18, 2026
But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ… Philippians 3:20, ESV
One of the great challenges of our day is that every position or opinion has the potential to divide and alienate. We are deeply suspicious of “the other” and assume the worst about someone as soon as we hear something we disagree with. If they think that, then they must believe this as well. We see this play out on our TVs and phones, yet it also plays out at coffee hour after church services and around the dinner table in our homes.
Often, the source of these divisions is our lack of a higher allegiance that unites us across our many differences. For example, if someone self-identifies as Republican or Democrat, those identities often sit on the top shelf and become the filter through which everything else flows. And if that is true, when you encounter someone who is of an opposing belief, your views are so divergent that (seemingly) the only possible posture is one of self-defense and/or combat.
What we need is an allegiance that transcends all of our divisions. This is not pie-in-the-sky optimism that calls for “world peace.” This is a deeply Christian belief that says our first and foremost allegiance is to Jesus Christ and his kingdom. Therefore, if something is a “kingdom value,” it should be our value, regardless of how that plays out in the kingdoms of this world.
To be clear, this is not a neat and tidy undertaking! It likely means you will find yourself in agreement with one group on one issue and with another group on a different issue. This is not a sign of confusion or a lack of commitment to a cause. No, quite the opposite! It’s you choosing to say that your ultimate loyalties lie elsewhere and that the values that guide your life and decisions are shaped by a kingdom that is not of this world.
When countless groups, parties, tribes, and ideologies vie for your allegiance, remember afresh today that there is only one King to whom you bow and only one kingdom to which you ultimately and truly belong.
Prayer
Father, remind us of our ultimate allegiance and our true and lasting home, we pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Application
Seek today to remember that you are a citizen of God’s kingdom, and filter every other concern or care through this one lens.
