Choosing Joy in the Deepest Pain

Written by Pat Elsberry

No matter what you are walking through, God is still a Red Sea God and continues to redeem, restore, and revitalize us!”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – February 25, 2024

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. Romans 15:13

Recently, I listened to a great podcast by Rick & Kay Warren. It’s actually a 6-part series on walking through hard times in life. Even though they were pastors to one of the largest congregations across the country for so many years, they were well versed in deep pain.

Unfortunately, their son Michael died by suicide in 2013. They took four months off from ministering to others and allowed God to minister to them. Don’t get me wrong, they didn’t wake up after four months and were suddenly happy and well. No, they just decided it was time to return to the game of life and allow God to use their story for His good.

Having walked through child loss, I can relate to this. Perhaps you, too, have suffered a profound loss, and you’re struggling with finding joy again in life. It’s not easy, but my friends, it’s also not impossible. We must lean into the Lord, not turn away from Him during these times.

No matter what you are walking through, God is still a Red Sea God and continues to redeem, restore, and revitalize us! You may be going through a valley right now, but be encouraged by the words of Paul in 2 Corinthians 4:8-9: “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.”

There may be many moments in life that we will never fully understand why things happened as they did. You may find yourself adding it to a long list of things to “talk to God about” when you get to Heaven. It often makes me wonder how important this will be once we finally hear the father’s answers. They will likely pale in comparison to what our eyes behold.

We will all have pain, but as Christ’s followers, we have hope. Believers grieve with hope! When we are grieving, we are grieving for ourselves – not for those who are in Heaven. As we move through the hard days, let us choose joy in our deep pain. Let us live in the light of eternity, knowing this is not the end of our story!

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God” (2 Corinthians 1:3-4).

Prayer

Father God, as we walk through deep pain help us to remember that you are still our ultimate hope and joy. Help me to keep my eyes focused on you and what I cannot see.
