Can I Come In?

Written by Tripp Prince

We learn who we are and who we are meant to be by dwelling in his presence, one day at a time.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – January 15, 2026

Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me. Revelation 3:20, NIV

I recently came across one of the most heartwarming stories that I’ve heard in a long time, a simple yet moving account of a young married couple who had a knock on their door that forever changed their lives. As the story goes, they were preparing Christmas dinner when an autistic homeless man knocked on the door and asked if he could join them for dinner. As the couple tells the story, they said two words that turned their world upside down: “Come in.”

The man joined them for dinner and stayed for the next 45 years.

The story is worth reading in full, as it is a testimony to the power of self-giving love, yet it is for me a reminder of the way in which our life with Christ is an unfolding journey, with twists and turns that we could never anticipate when we are standing at the starting line. In truth, this is a mercy, as the full weight of life’s joys and pains is more than anyone can bear at a single moment. This man at the door, for example, didn’t say, “Can I come in for the next 45 years?” but simply said, “Can I have dinner?”

As Scripture reminds us, our Lord Jesus stands at the door and knocks. It is a knock that will forever turn our world upside down, yet it begins with a single meal, a first act of welcome. We become the men and women we were made to be through a daily response to Christ’s invitation. The initial welcome becomes a pattern of life. We learn who we are and who we are meant to be by dwelling in his presence, one day at a time. His presence can be a comfort and a disruption, but it is exactly where we are meant to be.

Prayer

Father, give us hearts that are quick to welcome Christ today, tomorrow, and every day, learning to dwell with him as he dwells with us. Amen.

Application

How can you welcome Christ in and dine with him today, trusting that he will give you the strength to face whatever the future may hold?
