“There is no evil that Christ has not already overcome.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – January 24, 2026
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Ephesians 6:10-13, NIV
On vacation at the beach, my brothers and I would often play the “shoving game,” which consisted of a one-on-one battle to see who could push the other one over without moving their feet: brotherly competition at its finest! If a foot came up out of the sand, you were disqualified. As such, this game required a deep and deliberate “settling,” pressing yourself down as firmly into the sand as possible in anticipation of the shove that was soon to come your way. If you got caught off guard and unprepared, it was certain defeat.
I thought of this silly game today as I read Ephesians 6, a passage in which St. Paul reminds us of the necessity of preparation. He doesn’t try and sugar coat reality. There is a very real struggle in our lives and in our world. Dark spiritual forces exist that seek to work against the kingdom of God and the Spirit’s work in our lives. We ignore this to our great folly! To stick with my opening image, there is an opponent who seeks to unseat you and knock you to the ground, and the stakes are infinitely higher than a silly game on the beach. This is the stuff of life and death, darkness and light waging a holy war.
There is no evil that Christ has not already overcome, and his presence in you can defend and protect against whatever the Evil One may send your way. However, we must live aware of this reality and alert to the danger we face. This isn’t to say we live in constant fear. No, far from it! Christ has overcome sin and death once and for all! Yet we must be made able to stand, putting on the full armor of God every single day.
Let us never forget from where our strength comes. It isn’t found in our quick wits, our professional skills and successes, or in our material goods. Christ alone is our strength and our hope, and we are safe to the extent we look to him for our salvation and deliverance.
Prayer
Father, through Christ at work in us, make us men and women who are able to stand, no matter what the enemy may send our way, trusting that your Spirit will protect and keep us until the very end. Amen.
Application
How can you put on the full armor of God today, so that you are made able to stand?
