A Year of Community

Written by Tripp Prince

Our life with Christ is always personal but never individualistic.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – January 1st, 2026

Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ. Galatians 6:2, NLT

In so many areas of life, we’ve discovered the power of community and shared experiences. Rather than exercising in isolation, we join a gym or running club. Our work is enhanced when we collaborate with colleagues, each sharing their own gifts and expertise. And when we go to a concert or take a vacation, we almost always go with friends and family. And yet, when it comes to faith, we can persist in our belief that Christianity is first and foremost a private affair.

I’ve been told most of my life that what’s most needed is a “personal relationship with Christ.” And while, rightly understood, this is a beautiful and profound truth, it should never be interpreted to mean a fundamentally private or isolated experience. Our life with Christ is always personal but never individualistic. He comes to save a people, a family to which you and I belong. Our private rhythms of faith, such as prayer, study, or Bible reading, must never be the full or complete expression of our Christian faith. In truth, I would challenge you to see them as supplemental to the primary call upon each of us to find our life within the body of Christ, where he promises to dwell and meet with his people.

The new year brings with it new hopes and dreams. We often make resolutions and commit ourselves to goals of self-improvement or development. If you’re not yet sure what your resolution should be, can I offer a simple suggestion? Make this year “a year of community.” At every turn, consider how you can more fully live your life with the family of God. Study the Scriptures in community. Prioritize weekly attendance at church. Open your home to others for fellowship and to share in life’s joys and sorrows.

Though community can be difficult, the rewards are truly eternal. Take a step of vulnerability this year, and see how the Lord meets you and those around you in new and exciting ways!

Prayer

Father, this year, give us the gift of life together with you and the people you’ve given to us for the journey of faith, we pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.
